Cardiff to Bournemouth

M4 to J17, round Chippenham to Melksham. Cross country through Seend Cleeve to the A360.
As you get close to Salisbury turn right into The Avenue towards Wilton. Left on to A36 then right to skirt round Salisbury and join the A338 all the way to Bournemouth.
Great roads across the Salisbury Plain, used to go that way loads.

I would stay away from the A338 between Salisbury and Ringwood though.
It's only S2 and progress can be a bit of a PITA if you're in a camel train.
This route to the A31 avoids it completely and is much nicer - https://goo.gl/maps/f1i7QSd2hPz
The A338 south of the A31 is a totally different beast.
A fast d/c with GSJs all the way to the A35 roundabout.

Down A46 on to A4 next to Bath
A363 to Bradford-on-Avon
B3109 to Rode
A36 to Warminster
A350 to Shaftesbury
B3081 all the way to Ringwood (includes Zig Zag Hill
)
A338 to Bournemouth
You're welcome
If you go this way after zig zag hill take the right fork near Ashmore towards Farnham, it's an unclassified road but really very good and joins the roundabout at the top of the A338. Way faster than the road that goes through Tollard Royal/6PHDown A46 on to A4 next to Bath

That's very true, that's the way I go, but (a) it's a bit harder to explain, and (b) from a once-only enjoyment front, I'd say the B-road is more fun.
