Hi,

I have some spare time on my hands and would like to do an 'Eco' road trip to Monaco in the next few weeks. I'd probably have 5 days to do Calais-Monaco-Calais which I appreciate is not along time.

Two objectives of the journey:

The journey is the holiday not the destination and I am happy to drive a lot each day. I will also only be one-up so no annoying passengers to appease. I'm happy to spend only one morning or afternoon in Monaco just for a quick 'looksy'.

This is an 'anti-excess' trip so I won't be taking the BMW or TVR, I'll be in the Eco Seat and I don't really want to stay in plush hotels. I'd rather stay in cosy non-chain hotels (not F1 motels!!). (Long story but I want to clear my head!)

Ideally I'd rather avoid all autoroutes however if it makes sense to take an autoroute for the boring north of France or take the autoroute back to maximise the journey down, I'm open to the recommendations.

The car will have regular tyres in it so I can't really go into the mountains at this time of year.

Any route or hotel recommendations really welcome.

Thanks.

(Alternatively I am open to other destinations that will take 5 days as the destination isn't that important but do bear in mind no winter tyres!)

If you've only got 5 days, I'd drive straight to Monaco, stay somewhere around Nice / Menton and spend the rest of your time exploring the cote d'azur.

I could probably squeeze an extra day or two if really needed....

I appreciate a lot of people will probably disagree with me here, but I used to live in France and do a lot of driving there, and my experience is that if you want to see some great places/roads, you have to go very far off the autoroutes, which is fine if you've got a couple of weeks, but takes up a lot of time if you're only there or a few days.

If you go straight down to Monaco, you've got Nice, Cannes, St Tropez, and all the fantastic scenery/roads in the parks of Mercantour and Verdon, and you could even spend a day on the italian coast if you fancied it. None of those are massively far apart, so you won't be spending hours every day driving.

It should be good driving. The roads will be empty compared to summer - except rush hours. Watch out in February as there is a weeks school holiday. Also any autoroute connected to the alpes especially on a Saturday can be a nightmare. In Provence Its truffle time if that is your thing?
Chambre d'hotes can be interesting and a change from hotels but I imagine that the hotels will be having a lot of 'promotions'
