Good roads - RH10, Crawley, West Sussex
Discussion
Hi all
Can anyone advise of some good roads, outside of Crawley, West Sussex; post code RH10 9NQ?
I will be exploring the area this Sat, from 0930 to 1630 - so have the whole day and want to make the most of what's around.
I am looking for a mix of twistys, good scenic roads etc - any thoughts, routes please?
Southdowns a good option and doable?
Oh and a pub for some food afternoon lunch : )
Your thoughts will be hugely appreciated.
Cheers.

South Downs definitely doable.
Have a look at this for the morning - https://goo.gl/maps/5wGbDh5GzMz
Lunch here - http://www.thebullinnhenfield.co.uk/mainmenu.html
I'll see what I can come up with for the afternoon.

Afternoon - https://goo.gl/maps/g498WuLMyyx - it has the an added bonus of a tunnel.
If time is a factor cut out the section through Ringmer and Glynde
Go all the way round the Malling Street roundabout.
Then back through the tunnel to the A27 roundabout and east to Beddingham.
The Beachy Head loop can be done either way round. Personally I prefer anti-clockwise.
This is because you will be on the main drag (A259) heading west through East Dean.
It can take a while to exit if you're in a queue coming north from Birling Gap.

Roads in that area I find are quite poor really.I will be exploring the area this Sat, from 0930 to 1630 - so have the whole day and want to make the most of what's around.
Lots of traffic to / from Gatwick airport, quite a large percentage
of which seem to be in rental cars and aren't too familiar with UK roads.
The whole of the A25 / A23 / A264 / A24 box is a 40 mph limit,
so no joy there.
East of the A23, it's swarms of East Grinstead based Volvo drivers, who appear incapable
of more than 40 mph.
Nearer Crawley, it seems to be mostly a bunch of blue collar types constantly
on their hand held mobile phones, so *industrial* amounts of inattentive driving.
For pubs in Crawley, it's mostly lager, Sky TV and fights, so probably
best avoided if you value your life.
Outside Crawley, when I am down there dropping off a customer,
I like the Blue Ship RH14 9BS, the Shepherd and Dog BN5 9LU
and the somewhat cosmopolitan Evening Star in Brighton BN1 3PB.
Also worth considering is the Hatch Inn TN7 4EJ, the Red Lion
RH17 7DE (moderately well known BMW garage nearby) and the ever lovely
Coach and Horses RH17 7JF.
If you want to visit 1935, the Queens Arms TN8 5NP. No lager, no food,
no jukebox, no music, mostly shut, might have crisps, only one beer. Lovely.

Hence I gave him a route to get him there.

Nearly all of that box is north and west of Crawley, so not likely to be part of the OP's plan. so no joy there.
My route doesn't enter it anyway, so I'm unclear how relevant your point is.

Again, the section of the morning route east of the A23 is a very small part of the whole.of more than 40 mph.
Once out of the 40 limit beyond the M23 it's NSL except for Turners Hill and Handcross.
Unless stuck in a camel train I've never had much difficulty in dispatching any 40mph everywhere types on the B2110.

OK, so you despise Crawley. So what? It has nothing to do with the thread which is about good roads. on their hand held mobile phones, so *industrial* amounts of inattentive driving.

The OP is planning a drive so won't be drinking in the town anyway. Why are you introducing all these irrelevancies?

Only the Shepherd and Dog and Evening Star make sense, The rest are too close to Crawley.I like the Blue Ship RH14 9BS, the Shepherd and Dog BN5 9LU

The former is a good call but can get busy on a fine day at weekends (lots of walkers).
The latter is a non-starter imo; I would never consider going to the centre of Brighton.
Double yellow line central plus being one of the most car-unfriendly places in the country.
