After some pointers please!

My awesome wife has booked Euro Tunnel tickets for my birthday weekend in August, in order for me to lose my Nurburgring virginity. We head to Calais via the Euro Tunnel on the 15th of August, and return on Monday the 18th.

The current plan is to arrive in Brussels on the 15th for a night, and then head on to the Nurburgring early on the 16th, allowing for queues etc that we may face at the 'ring.

I'm struggling to plan on what to do afterwards. Initial thoughts were head up to Frankfurt and have the night of the 16th there, however i'm trying to think of better options in order to get to Calais on the 18th without too much of a trek. Also thought of heading to Luxembourg on the 17th for the night, and then head to Calais on the 18th, but i'm sure there are better ways to do the trip back up to Calais.

So, what are your suggestions?

Frankfurt's a bit far from Brussels just for an overnighter.
You'd be driving hundreds of KM past a lot of nice places to get there.

Somewhere much closer like Trier, Monschau or even Dusseldorf would be better, in my view.

I'd recommend Luxembourg city. Pretty, but like most capital cities, quite expensive.

Some of the towns on the Mosel river on the East Luxembourg / Germany border
like Remich and others are nice too.

Other places further North like Maastricht, in the three countries corner of
Netherlands, are good too.

There you go, six suggestions and I didn't mention obvious tourist traps
like Amsterdam or Brugge.
