Am sure plenty of you have all driven up through Wales rather than slog along the M5. My father and a mate would much prefer driving their classics along A-roads than motorways.

Does anyone have a proven route from say SE to NW Wales? A470 looks likely?

Well sighted A-roads are better than single lane moorland routes and whilst it's not about the pure driving experience, a little exciting detour never hurt anyone.

Cars are both quite quick 1960's cars so overtaking not a problem but I think they'd probably want to avoid any obvious caravan routes.

Thanks to all in advance, much appreciated.

I have a handful of minutes to spend on this so forgive me fr not putting in masses of numbered details

Chepstow >> Raglan over the top near Trellech (Treleck)
Hop on to dual carriageway up to Monmouth. Enjoy short blast (ahem) thru tunnels)
Turn left and follow route back toward Abergavenny - on to A40 >> Crickhowell >> Brecon
Up passing the cathedral along the B4520 via Lower and Upper Chapel to Builth Wells.
Still avoiding the A470 find the A483. West via Cilmery - Garth - Beulah
North from Beulah along B4358 to Newbridge on Wye joining the A470 >> Rhayader >> Llangurig.
Right on A470 to LLanidloes.
At top roundabout turn back in to town to roundabout nr Peugeot (Texaco) garage and right over bridge and almost immediately left up for Staylittle on B4518.
Not very very long after Staylittle turn LEFT for Machynlleth via the Dyliffe Gorge, Forge dropping in to Machynlleth.
Turn right (north) on to A487 passing near the Mach Loop >> rejoin A470 for Dolgellau and on to Ffestiniog.
I am a lot less au fait with north Wales.
Yes I have included miles over narrower roads but hopefully they'll still work for you.

There's a few ideas anyway

This is the route I take from Worcester to the PCGB circuit day once a year to Anglesey. It takes about 4 hours.

It starts at Junction 6 of the M5 heading north west on the A449, turning off at Ombersley and then heading west on the A4133 which becomes the A443, (Worth a stop to have a quick look round burnt out Witley Court and the impressive Church).
Then from Newnham Bridge head west on the A456 until it reaches the A49
Head north on the A49 (If you want a treat drive through Ludlow, not bypass) until you reach Craven Arms .....
Three miles north of Craven Arms take the A489 to Church Stoke, from here take the A490 to Welshpool. (As you enter the town supermarket and loos are on your right if you need a pitstop).
From Welshpool carry on the A490 north and then B4393 to Lake Vyrnwy (Drive over dam for coffee) then drive back over dam, skirt the north side of the lake and at its northern tip, take minor road (This is narrow, twisty and has sheer drops) to the B4391 just before Bala
From Bala, nead north west and take the A4212 for about 5miles, take a right on the B4501 to the A5.
From the A5 head west to Anglesey ... This trip is very scenic, lots of twisties and little traffic until you reach the A5. In places you could hit 100, in oithers you would be risking it at 30. I love it.

There is a really good route from Balla to Ffestiniog and A4085 further west, however it starts taking alot more time and I usually come back that way.
