Retarded Junction, Newcastle City Centre
Discussion
Don‘t know if it‘s just me - or my unfamiliarity with Newcastle City Centre. But I drove there today for the first time. After climbing at Newcastle Climbing Centre (Byker), we tried to follow our sat nav to ‘The Gate‘ to meet a friend and found ourselves at the junction of B1307 (Percy St. iirc) and B1311, outside Eldon Square.
Approaching from Percy St, I was faced with:
No right turn, except for buses, taxis and cycles.
No through road, except for buses on the left.
No cars straight ahead.
No U-turns.
So wtf are you supposed to do? It can all be confirmed on Google streetview, but not sure how to post a link from my tablet. Feel free to go and check it out for yourselves. I did notice that most traffic just seemed to turn right anyway. I went straight on, on the basis of that was what the sat nav was telling me to do.
Anyone familiar with this place?

I know this very well.
Just before said junction is a mini roundabout with a sign reading:
"Busses, taxis, cyclists and local access only past this point"
In your defence this sign is actually after the mini roundabout and in the centre of the carriageway when it really should be before the roundabout.

Ah, yes I know the very mini roundabout you mean. The sign you refer to is an advisory sign (Local traffic only - all other routes), rather than a prohibitory sign. All the other signs at the nest junction are prohibitory. I may in fact have read that sign and mistakingly believed that my attempted access to the gate constituted my classification as ‘local access‘. The following sign you‘re going to miss until it‘s too late if you are a) following one of the many busus or b) focussing on the taxis waiting to join the mini roundabout from the right.

Found myself in this labrynth a month ago.
Coming to the end, at the side exit of Eldon Square, sitting waiting at a red light, bloke from 7.5 tonner behind gets out of cab to inform me (good naturedly) that I'd be £70 out of pocket due to all these effin cameras, and that he got a ticket just last week.
Don't know how exactly I got there, but I didn't get a ticket. So far... Agree though, It's a shambles.
The route has been explained.
However, what you need to know is that Newcastle City Council has an ideological detestation of the private motor car and wishes to exclude it from the city centre to the fullest extent possible. The policy is mad and bad for business. This being Newcastle and not the south east of England, only wilful eccentrics and the unemployed travel by public transport: the money comes to town by car. And if it can't come to town by car, it doesn't come to town at all. Or, more precisely, Toon.

It's a nightmare - I've been exiled from Newcastle for 21 years now and used to know the road system like the back of my hand.
When ever I go back it, frankly, bewilders me, though admittedly I can recall when you could drive all the way up Northumberland Street so I'm probabaly just old and confused!
As said it seems like the road network has been designed to confuse or deter the motorist
And don't get me started on the new Cowgate roundabout!

Happy days - I bought my wife's engagement ring from a jeweller at almost exactly this location in 1974.The Toon is a god-almighty mess now, though. Been away for 20 years and it is so anti-car it beggars belief!
Silly question - can you do a U-turn up where it shows "No right turn except buses / cyclists"?
- You're complying with all the instructions up there - not turning left, not going straight, not going right...
- There's no sign prohibiting a u-turn...
- ...so it's just whether the return lanes are something silly like buses-only...
Thoughts?
