I had to drive from Euston Station to Dover Ferry Terminal yesterday. I went east via Shoreditch and the Blackwall tunnel. It took three hours and was a bloody nightmare - I missed my ferry and had an hour wait for the next one. I think I would have been better off going out on the A3 and round the M25 - which was my original plan before I was advised otherwise. Which is generally quicker? I was leaving at 4:00 pm.

the trouble with the other route, is that you would have hit the roadworks from the m23 junction, back to the m26 split, and that can be a bh, but once on the m26 you should have had a smooth run down to dover.
i would have took the route that you did though.

Yeah M20 onwards was fine but it took me over 2 hours get to the M25. At least the M25 road works have three lanes but I guess there wouldn't be much in it.

I'd have headed over London bridge then:

A - Down tooley street (first left after the bridge) continued straight through Bermondsey, right at Rotherhite, down the Jamaica road to Lewisham, Lee high road and then straight down the M20 from where it starts there

B - Down the Old Kent Road, Through New Cross to Lewisham and down Lee High Road and the A20/M20 from there.

This was Monday. The worst part was down Commercial Street and the run up to the Blackwall tunnel.

I would take Jamaica Road over Old Kent Road any day. I would also steer clear of New Cross, and definitely avoid Lewisham, and Lee High Road. The latter is dreadful and the traffic lights at the Burnt Ash Road junction are a real PITA.

I would use Jamaica Road/Lower Road to Surrey Quays then Evelyn Street, Deptford Church Street, A2 Blackheath Hill, Shooters Hill Road to the junction with the A102/A2, then A2/M2 to Bluebell Hill. Two ways to Dover from there - M2/A2 or A229/M20.

Blame Boris, I bet you were going down nice wide roads with two lanes each way, but you could only use one lane as the other was an empty bus lane, and every area of constriction had loads of half empy buses blocking everything up, try it in rush half of each end of the day (formerly known as rush hour).
