Snowsocks on 265/35/20 Tyres
Discussion
Hi,
I plan to drive to southern France for a ski holiday. I would like to take a pair of snowsocks in case the roads are covered by snow. It was a bit scary last year when I was driving a front wheel drive rented car. Although mine got quattro, to be safe I will still put snowsocks on.
The problem is I couldn't find the snowsocks that fit correctly with my tyres. The size is 265/35/20. My question is I can find the snowsocks that fit both 275/35/20, 265/45/20, I wonder if this can also fit mine.
Any helps are appreciated.

Don't you have to carry chains in France anyway? Or do snow sock count?
And your quatro won't really help with the stopping

They're only really useful in emergencies to get you out of a patch of snow, and will be worn through in 10-20 miles.
I'd invest in a set of winter wheels/tyres as you may be required by the country's laws to have them fitted anyway. Unless you've got mahoosive brake discs, then a 19" option will be cheaper.

It will be a one off trip for me for some personal reasons. Investing a set of winter wheels/tyres (worth more than 1.5k) would be a total waste for me. You need winter tyres in Germany but I don't think you have to use winter tyres in France. Most of the roads to French ski resorts have sign for snow chains at the bottom. If you get stuck (or have an accident in bad conditions) without chains you'll have a large fine to pay. Snow socks (instead of chains) are a bit of a grey area though.I took my friend`s mapped 535d touring to Val D`Isere last February, on the way there I got lucky with the road up to the flat part and just about managed around town by letting it move off on idle HOWEVER my drive back DOWN was an UTTER pig, I had one pair of snow socks so decided to put them on the front for some braking which I think gave me more than I would have otherwise had but it was a nightmare, I love sideways more than anything but this thing had over 500lbs of torque at something stupid like 2k revs, the owner of the car sat in the passenger seat and didn`t say a word for hours, then let it slip that we could have taken his wife`s 4x4!
It also took me ages to get the socks onto his wheels before setting off, all very well in the promo videos where they show fitting them onto skinny tyres with big wheel arch gaps, try it on wide tyres with barely any gap between the wheel and the arch!

Hi,
you might evt. ask these people:
http://www.felthamtyre.co.uk/tyres.html
They used to rent out sets of 4, may be you will have to have wheels of a lesser diametre, depending on your brake-calipers;-)
Safe trip. Here everybody on is on snow-tyres, but even with 4x4 it can be a bit "special" to drive down-hill, beware!
