Would anybody here know - or know how I can find out - whether it is closed or restricted in the winter months? I am presuming that winter tyres will be obligatory?

Edited to add: the aim is to drive down from through the alps from Salzburg to Udine or thereabouts

I've done a bit of light surfing for you and there's no indication it's shut
in winter.

It's not one of the higher roads.

Suggest get in touch with the Salzburg tourist office for the official facts,
but I suspect you'll raise a wry smile with your cautious question.

Winter tyres, even if they are not required, would be very prudent.

Thanks dcb, I've read your posts before in the roads section. You're very familiar with the drive down to Munich - I'm presuming the autobahns would be fine going down to Munich too?

Certainly. Pop your winter tyres on and there are no significant hills from
Calais to Munich and a short distance beyond.

Mind you, you would be wise to check how fast your winter tyres allow
you to go. Do NOT exceed this limit.

Good stuff dcb, thanks. I presume doing it without winters would be not only reckless but contravene the law in at least Germany, Austria
