Gentlemen and ladies, I have a little business in South Wales next week and I'll have a day free for a bit of a hoon. I'm heading down there from the Hereford area and staying over in Swansea. Apart from the 4069 which I shall be doing I'd appreciate suggestions for bits of road worth doing in the Brecon to Pembroke area. driving

A lot of good recommendations on the 'best road found lately' thread on here, do check it out.

Drove around there recently and would definitely recommend the front half of the B4560 heading north and the B4521 from ross on wye to abergavenny. Some cracking roads around there, enjoy the drive! driving

There's a lot to choose from - do you want technical and twisty or fast and open?

How long do you want to spend - a direct route, or a real tour?

Here's an interesting one I was on today , not far from the A4069:

Thanks guys, I'll have a look at the other thread. I'll be in my daily driver 6 MPS so any type of roads will be fine as long as they are interesting. smile

Aha. On this road. Layby here.

The really weird thing is the two speed limit signs about 100 yards apart here and here.
Their purpose is a mystery as there are no NSL signs anywhere on that road AFAIK. Go figure!

Don't forget there will be a difference in conditions when you get up in the mountains. Looking at the weather today, take a snow plow.

Go out of Hereford for Clehonger, Madley, Bredwardine >> Hay (if you want twisty)
Beats the A438

- just for starters anyway -

Out and Back

Each around 200 miles with some really good bits. Less fun if the conditions are bad though.

cracking runs both ways tho i would tweak the Return route between Knighton and Hereford to go to Presteigne, Mortimer's Cross, Lucton, Croft and turn right >> thro Luston >> Leominster >> Marlbrook (Cadbury's factory) >> Bodenham and Sutton St Nicholas

Done. 199 miles - If I fill up with super in Hereford, I might just make that without a top up. wink

A4059 a good road too, some of the roads heading west from Crickhowell are great too. A4107 also a favourite of mine.

A neighbour told me to 'just drive north on the A470' what do you think guys? Never been around there and planning to escape for 2 days this week.

Many many choices. A470 to Brecon, B4520 out of Brecon centre. Past Upper Chapel pick up the B4519 through the Army ranges, check flags for firing that day. Stop at the view point... crack on come back down the A483 and pick up A 4069. Be a bit out the way by then but its fun getting back.

Trouble with the A470 is it's the major northsouth trunk so everything wants to use it
Great road but better with nothing on t... like so many roads really
It depends whether you're just out for fun or trying a decent road but wanting to get from A to B

Where are you heading from? If you're coming over the M4 bridge take a look on the map and find the B-road that runs from Chepstow to Usk (can't remember the name). It's a brilliant way of getting across to the Brecon Beacons.
