On a visit home I've just found that the Hampshire County Council are proposing to turn the stretch of the A339 from Basingstoke to near Alton into a 40 and 50mph zone.

http://www3.hants.gov.uk/pnadetail?noticeUID=777

Whilst clearly this road has had a relatively high accident rate in the past, the majority of these accidents are motorcyclists who are unlikely to be affected or abide by the proposed new speed limit, which has few benefits in improving safety for cars.
If you wish to submit an objection to the proposal for whatever reason (live locally or want to preserve a decent driving road etc.), they need to be submitted by the end of the forthcoming week.

Regards.

Gives the few irresponsible motorcyclists more slow moving convoys of vehicles to overtake dangerously.

Standard fayre for numpty councils, egged on by numpty residents, and politicised numpty pressure groups like Brake.

One such limit reduction near me is so daft, it has been routinely broken by practically everyone who uses it by 10-20mph over since it came into force in 2004. NSL 70 DC to 40/50. Never seen a scamvan on the stretch, so it is fair to assume the Police also think it is daft.
