Best time for a Snakes Pass run
Discussion
Its a wee while since I was living down that way (moved back up north just after it got "50'd") but I always found the best time was on a clear night. Saturday and Sunday mornings are quite clear traffic-wise but there will be a camera van on the straight after Ladybower as you head towards Glossop. A bit further south but I always had a soft spot for tye A619/A623/A6 route back in the day too.
Well, I accidentally answered my own question. I got to Snakes Pass at around 4pm to find it was closed. Although when I say closed, I mean for everybody that didn't drive around the cones...
The first run was a steady one with a keen eye on the outside air temp. Temp at the coldest point was 3degrees, there was no frost or ice.
So I did 4 full speed runs with the entire snakes pass to myself
I would have kept going up and down until I ran out of fuel if it wasn't for my passangers who eventually got bored
I don't think I'm ever going to get the oppotunity again
but I made the most of it while I could
That was literally the best drive I have ever been on. And I've been on lots

I did it several months ago at around the same time of day and there was very little traffic. Still the best drive I've ever had in the UK, and at the time I was in a 1.4 astra which really struggled up the hills. Keep meaning to go back there with my new car but I can't really justify such a long journey just for one road.
Why not plan it as short trip with the peak/lake district lots of other lovely roads there as well I did 3 days up there earlier in the year on my bike just to ride snake/hardknot/honnister and quite a few others was a bit of a slog getting there from London but well worth it
