I have this beauty about 30mins drive from home. Ftom Chora Stafion on the south coast north through a pass to the National Road. A delight, but watch out for the odd tourist coach coming the other way!

Holy thread resurrection and all that, but amen to that man! Just got back from a day out visiting various places and I kept Hora Sfakion til last so I could give this road a try. I even had some fun with one of the locals in a Hilux pickup and was quite evenly matched for pace in my 1.2l Corsa.

But seriously, if anyone wants to have a bit of a play over the winter, come to Crete for just a few days and head for the mountains. The roads are excellent, many with good visibility and the other drivers even move over for you if you're trying to make progress which is a delight compared to the arrogant, self-important UK drivers.

Glad you enjoyed the road! Brakes cannot last going down so uphill is more fun. Rules of the road here are simple. 1. White lines in the middle of the road show you where it goes. If there's more than one it's because the road is a bit difficult to follow. 2. over and the guy behind pass. The most dangerous thing on the road is a clean hire car heading away from the airport = just landed and don't klnow the Cretan style of driving!

Being used to holidaying in Malta for 20 odd years, which is about 25 miles end to end, several years ago on holiday I thought I would have a short "little run" from Agios Nickolaos to Kissamos....big mistake.....smile

Great roads though..

Now the roads are quieter, tourists by and large gone home, Sunday is Motorbike day along the National Road. Xhania to Agios Nic in under 2 hrs is the target!

Coming back to me now....Was about 14 years ago, remember we hired a little green Renault Twingo from a small hire place in Malia...it was out of season,...March, most of the shops in Malia were shuttered up, but I remember someone saying if you come back in a month it would be heaving with rowdy 18-30 types.......rolleyes

Seemed to be on the road forever, stopped at Rethymnon on the way back and had a brief walk along the beach, I seemed to remember every shop seemed to have hundreds of scooters for hire...more scooters than people on the Island.....biggrin

Was very impressed with Hania....lovely town.

Well I never! I had already planned the 1 hour detour on our drive from Chania to the south coast in order to take in this road, then find it's the first post in the first thread thrown up by a search! Great minds and all that :-)

If only I could find something intersting to rent :-( But then I'm a firm believer that one can enjoy a really good road in any car, with the right mindset.
