On Discovery Turbo

(If this should be in TV, I apologise, thought it would get a better response in here)

Have to admit, have never been that into F1, and am also too young to remember any of the things going on in the technical heydey (turbo, ground effects etc), but the tech that has been developed, and subsequently banned is absolutely mind boggling!

The Williams Active Suspension I found particularly impressive.

Basically , where do you think Formula 1 would be today, had it not been pinned down by health and safety? Still 1.5 litre turbos? Perhaps approaching 1000bhp/litre? Full ground effects and active suspension?

A combination of these things, I would imagine would knock 5-6 seconds off a lap straight away. Oh, and before anyone mentions it, yes I have seen the Red Bull concept car.

An interesting watch for anyone who isn't clued up on Formula 1 history.

it'd be a 6 wheeler, 4 at the rear 2 at the front, the other way round to the Tyrell. In the rain the rearmost tyres could be slicks because the ones infront would clear the standing water. There wouldnt be any wings as full length skirts would allow the ground effect to be more effective than wings anyway.

The drivers would wear g-suits.

Active steering and suspension. 6 wheels. Cvt gearbox. Ideally without the unpredictability of being driven by a human.

The fan car was pretty awesome for the one race it was allowed to compete in, before being banned. I saw it at the Goodwood festival of speed a few years back:

"The concept was declared illegal by the FIA before the car could race again. The BT46B therefore preserves a 100% winning record."

I thought it only raced once because it was banned. Please enlighten me, I'm genuinely curious.

The wiki page isnt quite right

Ecclestone the then owner of Brabham pulled it for a few reasons, first off, to save on court costs and to preserve the result as there was a good chance the car could have been found to be illegal due to the fan actually being a moveable aero device and not just to cool the engine like they claimed.

As we know Ecclestone had his sights set on more than just being a team owner though, he wanted to control F1 and needed the support of the other teams to get it. Having a car that was loose in its interpretations of the rules might have pissed off the other team bosses and made him a bit PNG and so the fan car was canned after that one race and before it was actually banned by the FIA. Lotus went on to win the championship but Bernie went on to rule F1.

An interesting question I guess. We would need to add up everything that has been banned from F1 for being too competitive and roll it into one car. So:

Active Suspension
Active Aerodynamics
Fan Assisted Ground Effect
Unlimited KERS
Derestricted Turbo engines
CVT Gearbox
Cockpit
Torque Vectoring All Wheel Drive
Covered wheels

Any more?
