lol...I found (and lost) an interview recently on YouTube with Nigel Mansell (first stint at Williams) uttering those immortal words - perhaps he started it.

LOL thats great.

I didnt really notice it until posts on here but now I find just a single "for sure" very annoying.

But have the drivers, and some team principals, seen the forsure championship? They are competitive away from the track too, for sure.

Button now showing well in the "for sure" Championship. No end to the boy's talents.. hehe

As previously discussed here and elsewhere, "for sure" usage is decades old. It pre-dates even Bjorn Borg back in the 1970s, who used the term many times during various interviews at Wimbledon.... even back then I found it mildly annoying ... even moreso now ... that's certainly for sure!

I always thought it was Alain Prost who started all this. It is an English version of the French "bien sur".

I think there may well be some truth in that.

It was okay when the foreign drivers did it, but now we have native English speakers dropping it in wherever possible there has to be an element of farce, surely?

I think the commentators for the Indy 500 would be winning hands don.

Must of been at least 10-20 times in one event.

I dunno. I think it's just being a product of your environment.

When working in Munich a few years ago, in an office crammed with German, Swedish, Dutch, French, Turkish and Spanish workers all speaking English, they (and eventually me) adopted similar colloquialisms.

I just ended up saying some phrases just as they were, even though they weren't correct English.

Alain Prost is the first driver I can definitely remember saying it.

It was originally an Italian thing. Dad has Italian friends and they drop it in every 5 seconds. Therefore I blame Ferrari.

As earlier posters have said it definitel pre dates Alain Prost saying it. I've seen interviews from the 70's with various drivers saying it.
