The Spaniard’s dreams of joining the legendary Italian team seemed to be in ruins when Ferrari announced they had signed Kimi Raikkonen for another two years.
Double champion Alonso, 26, had hoped to replace the Finn, whose form of late has been a concern for the Prancing Horse outfit.
So far he has resisted all efforts to sign a contract with any team.
Renault boss Flavio Briatore, who doubles as Alonso’s agent and was instrumental in getting him back in his team after a year with McLaren, said: “We want him to stay.”
But according to sources in Spain, Spanish bankers Santander, who jumped on the McLaren bandwagon with Alonso in 2007, are set to sponsor Ferrari.
And they are anxious to resume their links with Alonso (right) – provided he joins the team.
But they have little or no interest in Raikkonen.
And their promise of massive cash backing could force the Finnish driver out.
But he is hardly likely to lose out. Santander would pay him off with a compensation figure likely to be not far short of his agreed wages.
The banking giant would also meet Alonso’s pay demands.

The seven-times world champion – five of his titles won in a Ferrari – was courted by Luca Montezemolo, the company supremo, to take the job at the start of this season.
Frenchman Jean Todt, Schuey’s team mastermind in his title run, announced he was stepping down and his role was offered to the German ace.
But by then Schumacher, now 39, was enjoying the thrills and spills of his homeland motorbike racing championship.
Despite regularly crashing out this season, he plans to take it up even more seriously next year.
So instead of taking the main job at Ferrari, he opted for a less demanding position as an advisor to the team, sitting occasionally on the pitwall and playing mentor to Brazilian driver Felipe Massa.
And the team manager’s job was given to Stefano Domenicali, a popular figure around the Ferrari paddock.
Schuey, who pocketed around £900m from his spectacular, record-breaking career, revealed: “Yes, I had the chance to do what Jean Todt had been doing – to become a director of Ferrari for the racing part of the company.”
Back at his Swiss lakeside mansion, he talked the offer over with his wife, the mother of their two children.
She would have preferred him to accept and abandon his dangerous superbike racing ambitions.
But he hated the idea of being stuck in an office, a crucial part of the responsiblity.
“I saw how much passion and dedication Jean put into the job – just like I did in the car – and it was awesome,” he said.
“But far too often he was just sitting behind his desk in Maranello, day after day, even at weekends and late into the night.
“I said to myself, ‘Do I need this?’ My answer was, and is, simply no. Not at all.”

the rumour for most of the year was that alonso would replace massa as massa is managed by todt jr. this was fuelled by alsonso only signing a one year deal at renault when he left mclaren.
then the italians took massa to their heart and kimi went awol so it would appear the tide has turned and now they want to keep massa and drop kimi....
