Welcome to aerodynamics, 2009 style...

Williams reveal 2009 wing package

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72093

Williams have become the first team to reveal what the 2009-specification front wings will look like after Jonathan Kennard shook down an FW30 chassis fitted with the new-style front and rear wings at the Kemble airfield today.

The team had previously trialled a 2009-style rear wing at Barcelona in September, but today's run was the first time that the revised front wing had been displayed. Most teams are expected to try parts modified for the 2009 regulations in next week's Barcelona sessions.

Under next year's radically different aerodynamic rules, the wings have been simplified with most of the current additional protrusions removed. The front wing is lower and wider, and drivers will be able to make a limited number of wing angle adjustments from the cockpit. The rear wing has been made narrower and taller.

The aim is to improve the quality of the racing by allowing drivers to follow each other more closely in fast corners.

The definitive versions of the 2009 cars will also have different diffusers, slick tyres and kinetic energy recovery systems, and will no longer feature extra aerodynamic devices on the central bodywork.

Kennard's straightline test today was the former Formula 3 front-runner's first run in a Formula One car, and he expressed his gratitude to the team afterwards.

"It has been a good day today and great to be able to drive the new-spec Formula One car for the first time," he said.

"I would like to extend my thanks to Sir Frank (Williams) and the team for the opportunity. I enjoyed working through the test programme and assisting the team with their preparations for the 2009 season."
I know that there have been pictures of the rear wing posted before, but this is the first time the new, wider, front wings have been seen. Normally I'd apologise for not being able to find a bigger picture. This time, though, I'm glad I couldn't find one!

I must admit, that does look pretty turd.

Who cares though if the racing is better?

Its the rear wing which looks hurl to me. Why can't they just use a wing the same size as before and just limit the angle? Or make them narrower in terms of depth.

Hi Tom.

This is a fantastic article and explains the whole process of the 2009 cars' evolution.

It was only a few years ago that the front wing minimum height was raised.

I feared so.

F1 has to be the most bizarre sport I know. They try their hardest to annoy the fk out of the people that make it tick, yet, we still keep clawing for more each season.

One day, they're gonna just go that one step too far.

personally, i find it considerably less offensive than i was expecting. Perhaps it's the camera angle, or the treaded tyres that draw your eye to them.

Personally i think this year's cars had gone way past the point where they'd become hideous. imo all year the Ferrari has been relatively pleasing on the eye, the McLaren began the year as the most gorgeous car in the field until they nicked the shark fin engine cover from the Red Bull and then the evil horn things from the Beamer - and just ruined it!

Well I'll thank you. Great article and great read.

It seems a lot of time and money, as well as being overly scientific when the evidence for the solution already exists (the 80's!), has been wasted though, particularly on a £500,000 budget! Happens though, getting too deep into a problem can lose you focus and concentrating on too much deatil.

It also seems they are trying to manufacturer overtaking, than let it happen naturally, as with all other motorsports. - They're being too anal and technical.

IMO the solution is pretty simple; Wings need clean air andyou are never going to get this following another car when wings also leave dirty air behind, so what you need if you're going to have downforce, is a means to generating it without relying on clean air. That means doing it by suction but not manufactured air pressures. And that means low ride heights where downforce is created by near-vacuum pressures - there are ways of doing this without aerofoils. Remove the reliance on aerofoils. Make the wings much smaller and simpler and move the main generation to be the dynamics of a car skimming quickly over a surface.

This is how the cars were in the mid 80's - early 90's. There was loads of overtaking then! I think their attitude to the forward moving progress of F1 means they're affraid of devolving the cars.

The anvil engine cover was never raced by McLaren.

lol how true!

You are left to wonder, that if the FIA didn't interfere and the designers were left to build 2000bhp engines strapped into cars with 10 times the grip that they have now - What sort of spectacle we would {or wouldn't} have today?
