Marshal Shortage
Race may have to be cancelled - not enough men in orange
Discussion
It was good to see that at Snetterton on Sunday for the F3/GT meeting Avon Tyres had a prize draw for the Marshals, 1st Prize was money off Avon Tyres, (2nd Prize, Free Avon Tyres )
Also on the May 3rd Weekend is the Le Mans PQ day, I know a lot of British marshals go over for the main race, so some of them might be there for PQ as well.

I believe all marchalls get a certain amount off avon tyres anyway. Not had a chance to test the theory yet.
Not entirly what happend.
Octagon in thier usual efficent way only informed JCC of the change (to the international cct) last Thursday, having known about it for at least 3 months, and told all the other organising clubs at that time.
I belive only another ~12 marshals are needed? seems a real shame to can a meeting for 12 people...

I would imagine a quick call to the BARC would get them a list of all the people who have applied for brands that weekend but were turned down.
It does surprise me how much better the marshalling could be run in this country. It's getting better, but it's still very difficult to find out how to do what and when.
Umm firstly the headline reads "men in orange" I hate to break it to you boys but girls marshal too!!
Re F3/GT meetings, the deal is that anyone who marshals a F3/GT meeting can get discounted Avon tyres, from what I hear the prices are very good. There is then a draw for a 35% discount on Avon tyres at each round.
Also at Snetterton there was an additional Marshals draw to win laps in the two seater TVR. Unfortunately the TVR didn't run (!!) but the winner got to do a few fast laps in the safety car and TVR have promised him his laps the next time they are at the circuit.

There has been mention before of drivers having to marshall in order to race. I would personally be quite happy to do some training and do a stint marshalling in order to go racing.
Surely this would help the situation and probably make drivers more appreciative of marshalls.
Im suprised the MSA has not thought of it before.

I'm not sure that "making" drivers marshal is a particularly good idea, as a driver would you want to know that some of the people out there charged with your safety were only there because they were required to be?
Is it compulsory? I am a bit unsure if I think this is a good idea or not. Half of me says yes, because the drivers will see the incidents from the other viewpoint, and so may become 'safer' racers, the other half says no, because they don't want to marshal so will not be interested to give it their best.
It isn't compulsory at present. If drivers want to marshal then they can get a signature for it
I also have mixed opinions, I think all drivers should see things from a marshals point of view, I also think marshals should see things from a drivers view (if you'd like to pass me the keys to the Mosler Mr Short I'll have a go...) BUT I don't think compelling drivers to stand outside for 8 hours if they are uninterested is helpful to anyone.

intresting given at castle combe on easter monday there appeared to be marshals out in force, upto eight on a post. i read about one of the caterham championships which gave points out if a competitor marshalled at an event, i think this is a great idea and should be used throughout motor sport. it is a condition of the bristol motor club sprint championship that you must marshal at least one event in the season to qualify for the championship.
Terry's Beach is an in joke of a few Pit Marshals.
At the pit exit, the light controller is pit wall side of the lane and over what was a small amount of sand. The much missed Terry was found there one sunny day sitting on a fishing stool, wearing a pair of sunnies eating an ice-cream.
