Despite the record, I can see how he only had his team mate to beat last year. But he's now topped the times in every GP2 test that hes been in (OK, best car again, but not by muc I'd wager) - must be looking at favourite for the title in his first year.

What price full F1 drive in 2007?

Steven Kane isn't racing in GP2. He will be in World Series by Renault this year.

At the end of the day it looks like Hamilton has the talent for F1, but more importantly the backing of Maclaren.

Another very clever move by Ron, would not surprise me to see Hamilton driving for them in 2009 and Ron to bag a nice little sponsorship deal with Nike. After all being the first black guy in F1 will be big news and appeal to a new type of sponsor, the fact that he appears to be not just quick but very quick is a bonus.

yes, you'd have to say, that potentially he could become the sports biggest star. a cross between tiger woods and schumi, a clever move by ronald..

i think the premat vs hamilton battle will be better than anything in F1 this year. Premat has been doing well in A1GP though now the other countries have begun to catch up the difference between team france and the rest of the world isnt as big. Hamilton is a class act though and it will be interesting to see him against a real driver in the same team.

Lapierre will be right up there too, there area good number of drivers in GP2 this year all capable of winning races.

I'll be cheering for Jason Tahinci thugh, apparently he's from Bristol, drink up thy cyder lad!

skr, stockhatcher,

Please take this the right way, but it's not that he's black, it's that he's the real deal. He's not only very fast, but very intelligent on track. Much like Schumacher, he spots new things, learns, and knows when & where to push or make a move. Even in F1, there are only a handful of drivers who have that ability (perhaps only MS, Kimi anhd Fernando).

In fact, you've reminded me to get some odds from William Hill on him winning a Grand Prix before 2010. I reckon that is as close to dead cert as you can get.

HiRich

I would agree that Hamilton does appear to be the real deal, but unfortunatly in this day and age you need a little more than that.

If you look at the majority of the drivers on the F1 grid, they offered a combination of driving skill and commercial opportunity. One of reasons Schey got the benneton drive back in 1993 is because he was German. Bernie brokered the deal for him to leave Jordan in order that he would have more success and pull in bigger German audiences. It also turns out that Bernie had a deal with German TV companies, which equals lots more money for every German on the grid.
I am not saying that he would'nt have got the drive were he not German, but it certainly helped. I suspect the fact that Alonso is Spanish also helped his cause, you only need to take a look at the amount of spanish that now watch F1 and you will see why.

I don't know about Nike being a new sponsor, they sponsored Schumacher for a few years.

Having watched Lewis Hamilton race on many occasions I have to agree that he is looking like the BIG star of the future - what a great F2 line up - this should produce great racing this year - the battle between Hamilton and Premat should be interesting - I think Hamilton is cooler under pressure - we'll see! A good season in prospect.

I saw bhim in an F3 race at Brands a while ago. He was very quick. Occassionally you get a driver as quick as him, and nobody wants to be his team mate as he will show themup!

I managed to talk to him for a bit, and he seemed a nice bloke as well- obviously he has been given a massive stroke of good luck from an early age, but he has used it well.

Good luck to him!

Look at all the other drivers in F2 2006.

Great read that. Some LH haters should read it and take note.

I recall reading an article years ago about his F2 days and how he was streets ahead of everyone else and destined for big things.

The lad did good.
