These pictures appeared in my Facebook feed.

Can anyone identify the car and driver?

In one of the comments, somebody said they thought David Piper was stood overlooking the wreck.

It's believed this happened at the East London (SA) GP circuit likely in the 80's or 90's.

Just to add - I can confirm the pictures were taken at the EL GP circuit.

The car could possibly be a Ferrari 330 P4 (formerly P2/3) or Porsche 917 K?

@PZR what is the "1988 ISP"? - International Sports Prototype?

Sorry, should have added. David Piper and Mike Knight set up a series for historic sports racers in the late 1980s (I think it was initially called the 'International Sports Prototypes Racing Club' or something like that?) which was really the staring point for the - still extant - South African historic racing scene.

Your photos are very likely to be from their first visit to the Prince George Circuit in East London in 1988.

That's what I was leaning towards in all honesty, and that's definitely 'Pipes' stood next to the crumpled wreckage (bent over in the first shot).

I've been told by someone that was there, that the car was a Lola T70MKIIIB that Wheatley? was driving.

Looks like it would be Mike Wheatley and his Lola T70 in March 1988.

Lost a leg due to injuries sustained, and also suffered burns. Kind of ironic that 'Pipes' was on hand, having himself lost part of a leg in a crash at Le Mans.

Thanks, I found this as well. The pictures are not of the same car, but the story below tells what happened in East London.
