I say this because I think Shane Van Gisbergen is a very underrated racing driver, he pretty much cleans up no matter what he drives.

He'll never fit in a single seater but I expect to see him win Le Mans soon.

Anyone else have a driver they rate?

Yes, me. Currently hold the fastest lap time at Snetterton, pre 65 saloon car racing.
Sorry I'm blowing my own trumpet but as no one else will blow it for you, you may as well...biggrinrotate

I'd say Pato O'Ward is pretty handy but from an open wheel background.

I wonder how someone like Mike Conway would fair in an F1 car, he's been in Prototypes for a while now.

more importantly he trounced Muller who was his nearest competitor for all 3 seasons.

He has won

WTCC 2014,2015,2016.
WEC 2019, 2021
Le Man 2021 - also coming 2nd 3 times and 3rd.

Doesn't this prove the F1 stuff about 'the 22 best drivers in the world' is pure nonsense?
If they're the best, how come so many don't last more than a couple of seasons?
How come they all speak English ? That suggests that no matter how good you might be, you can't race F1 if you can't speak English, which , obviously excludes drivers who are brilliant but have poor language skills.

I would rate a decent rally driver way ahead a F1 driver (any of them) any day. Way more skill involved.

When the competition is so tough, you only have to be the slightest bit slower to fall behind. I'm sure Nicholas Latifi must have very high skill to lap within 5 or so seconds of Verstappen, for instance, even though he looks rubbish and is losing his seat.

If European, they'll usually learn basics at school and through their junior careers, especially since many reloacte to the UK to race British F3. They'll become mostly fluent when they get into the F1 path through feeder series and improve from there. Don't forget that most F1 teams are based in the UK, and English is already widely taught and seen as useful by many. Some might find it harder if from elsewhere, ie Tsunoda, and some drivers haven't really spoken any in the past.

As for best driver? Historically I've usually said Sebastian Loeb, and I included F1 drivers when I said that, and can see hes still decent now. Since his retirement from WRC I've not really followed any other series in particular, so would be hard to say.

Actually he managed to squeeze into an F3 class car for the NZ Grand Prix last year.

He started from pit lane (after accidentally triggering the fire extinguisher instead of starting the car for the warm-up hehe ) and passed the entire field to win by a couple of seconds.

I was running through my top ten non-F1 drivers and it was scary to realise that half of them come from the same small country - NZ.

My top non-F1 driver is Scott McLaughlin. Such a shame that F1 is seemingly fixated on getting US drivers in at the moment.

He might be getting on a bit, but the default answer to this question is always Sebastian Loeb.
