A hero for many, as he was one of those guys that made average cars do amazing things, he rallied a Marina ffs, and his Opel years were amazing.

I certainly remember him in Dolomite Sprints and the 2 litres TR7 when it was introduced. Watched him at West Mids Safari park stage when I was about 13.

Steady rather than spectacular, loyal to British Leyland, his finest hour was probably 2nd to Hannu on the 1970 World Cup Rally, the like of which we will never see again.

My mother got me his book for Christmas last year, signed by him as he lived in the same village as her. Well worth a read to see what a long and varied career he had.
