Porsche 924 engine rebuild
Discussion
Hi all,
I am seeing a Porsche 924 race car this weekend.
It’s apparently had an engine issue and needs a rebuild but otherwise the car was in racing order.
The engine runs at idle though.
Any idea on the approximate cost for a rebuild and and particular outfit to go to? Are there many teams that run 924 anymore (think i have heard of EMC before).
Think i would use this in HSCC road sport so can’t do an engine swap for a 944 engine or something like that.
Thanks!
James

Hi Andy97,
Thanks i hadn’t thought of going in the FB pages for 7p Roadsport and CALM - will give it a try.
I think you were the one who mentioned EMC on another thread some time ago. I spoke to Kevin there some time ago and they sound legit - waiting for them to get back from holidays to discuss this. Didn’t know Augment and i am part time in Gloucestershire so have contacted them.
Do you have any idea whether there is much gain to be had over stock power on these cars with a race rebuild (flowed head, hotter cams, etc)? I think you mentioned you raced a 924 for some time?
Thanks for your help!

I did race a 924 but it was an S so same engine as a 944 so can’t really help with the 2 litre engine, sorry. Thanks i hadn’t thought of going in the FB pages for 7p Roadsport and CALM - will give it a try.

EMC are deifinitely legit and have been around racing Porsches for many years.
I used Augment for a while for an ECU and cam upgrade on my 924S and some work on my later 944T so worth talking too. The folks on the HSCC 70s Roadsports fb page, and the CALM Porsche fb page should also be good sources of advice.
The 924 seems very popular in HSCC 70s Roadsports and ISTR that an example may have even won the (class based) championship last year or the year before.
The CALM Porsche series with 750mc is the home of the 924 cars that used to race as the stand alone BRSCC Porsche 924 series. They are more highly developed and lighter than the HSCC cars, I think, so it depends where you intend to race as I don’t think that the CALM 924’s are eligible for HSCC but the HSCC ones may be for CALM (but might be at a disadvantage, not sure, but they do have power based classes).
I will also plug the CSCC Future Classics series as a good place to race. Good VfM (40 min races) and good driving standards and there are usually one or two 924 that race in that.

Did you view the 924 op?
I bought an old 924 race car about a year ago now. I’ve no intention of racing it (it was cheap and I couldn’t resist).
I’m slowly turning it into a GTS replica track day car type thing. It’s in not bad shape, has a decent welded in cage. Needed a couple of bits of welding here and there but nothing extreme.
The beauty of the 2 litre engines is how cheap they are to work on as opposed to the later Porsche 2.5 engine. I bought a whole, spare engine to muck about with for a couple of hundred quid. They’re also very tough, being essentially a diesel van engine.
If it doesn’t run right it’s probably the injection system. I’m binning the k jet on mine and fitting efi plus a sodding great turbo.

Email out to augment for when they are back from the break and I’ll call Kevin at EMC on Tuesday. Have managed to connect with someone at CALM All Porsche - we should be speaking in the next couple of days. Reaching out to the HSCC folk next. Hi Chris - saw the car today. It actually looks clean for a cheap 924 racer. Trying to speak to a few people on engine rebuild costs. Suspect there are some failed piston rigs at minimum (lots of white smoke out of the exhaust and rattle. Doesn't seem to be oil in coolant).I bought an old 924 race car about a year ago now. Plan is to do a bit of cheap racing and then either upgrade or (if not too financially ruinous) build it into a Carrera GT replica race car - though not sure where it would be eligible to race at that point.
Keen to see how your project is going. Do you have a build thread? Is the turbo already on?
No, I don’t have a build thread - I’m rubbish at that sort of thing.
To date, I’ve welded the bits that needed welding, modified the rear arch’s for extra wheel clearance, fitted the body kit - though it needs a little fettling and final fit.
Worked out where the turbos going - I’m fitting it on the inlet side of the engine as per the carrera race cars. There’s tons of room there once you ditch the k jet. Mocked up the link pipe to take it from the exhaust manifold to the turbo. Done this in mild steel, if it works ok I’ll get it remade in stainless.
I’ve also binned the pop up lights as that frees up loads of space for inter cooler plumbing, which is next on the list for mock up.
I managed to get hold of the correct gear box with the dog leg change plus the torque tube to go with it. Bought a 944 rear hatch with a much larger spoiler plus a replica set of Fuchs wheels in the correct offset.
I’ll try and get a photo later.
Where are you based? If you get stuck on the engine I could help. I’ve built a few race engines - mostly Alfa and Ford but the principles all the same.
It’s probably worth doing a compression and leak down test on yours before it’s gets stripped down. Helps pin pint the problem.

Thanks for the offer for help. I’m based in the Cotswolds and London, although unlikely to have a go at it myself - just no time to spare.
