Race teams

I’m curious to know, on what basis / motives are private race teams run?

Are they profit making businesses? or are they run to promote the owners business interests or do they do it just because the owner likes racing? I’m talking about the sports car / GT racing categories.

Most sports car teams are commercial operations making money from selling drives

As above really. They can also be run as part of an existing business so the main day to day activity might be some kind of specialist garage and because they have a workshop and a secure lock up they can branch out into prepping race cars. It still has to turn a profit though, no one would be doing it for the love of it.
