Are ICE race cars eventually doomed?
Discussion
Step away from the tin foil.
There's more environmental impact from people driving to a race, than there is during the race. There's no need to ban ICE in race cars. It wouldn't achieve anything except red tape.
They're not even banning ICE cars on the road. Again. There will be no need to do so. The numbers will drop as they become uneconomic to maintain, the masses will convert over and the problem will be solved. Classics will survive, but you'll likely have to have your own petrol supply tank at home in 30 years time when all the petrol stations have basically closed.
So no. Not in our lifetime. Someone will still be racing a 1965 Mustang, against a proper Cooper S Mini when we die. There will be electric/hydrogen/whatever racing as well mind you.

Are ICE race cars eventually doomed? With our government on the way to removing ICE cars from the roads, what's the outlook for Motor Sport? Personally, I'm not interested in watching my washing machine do its thing, electric cars go in the same rubbish bin.
I'll stop watching as soon as it becomes a "thing". Awful boring nonsense imho.TX.

This is brilliant. What are your predictions for 2021 so we can come back to them next year? There's more environmental impact from people driving to a race, than there is during the race. There's no need to ban ICE in race cars. It wouldn't achieve anything except red tape.

TX.
F1. For the past few years, they've gone hybrid as a sop to the current political stance that the planet is heading towards Armageddon, we're all going to fry. Now we're on the way to all-electric vehicles, cancel current F1 as now irrelevant, let's go back to noisy, exciting, naturally aspirated beasts, few electric gizmos, let the drivers drive the dam things, instead of a Sunday economy parade.

Electric racing is only boring as the current electric racing cars are usually s
te IMHO. Watching a properly fast electric car like a NIO EP9 or a VW IDR running is something to behold, even if it would be better with more noise.
That said if the world carries on going even more insane and takes aim at ICE motorsport then the ultimate backstop will be closed carbon synthetic fuels and hydrogen.
The only real danger is that with ICE disappearing from the roads then people lose interest.
But then Wikipedia says there are still 2851 steam powered traction engines recorded as is use within the British Isles and not only were there not that many of them in the first place but they've been pointless for 100 years and were boring to watch when they were in their prime 100 years before that!!

Maybe the opposite will happen, there would be a renewed interest in 'loud' racing cars when all road cars are silent. The only real danger is that with ICE disappearing from the roads then people lose interest.

100% agree that a few racing cars make nil difference to the environment when compared with say fans travelling to football etc
However I suspect the future will depend upon whether our sport gets into the cross hairs of the green brigade - personally I think private jets and powerboat racing are much more likely to face flack but its hard to predict.
Personally I am going to be doing as much racing as I can for the next couple of years

I do think that noise is more of a threat than the ICE per se. It has been limiting activities at race circuits for decades already.
My club does invite competitors to take part in a think tank on the environment.
I think that as long as people have the ICE era in living memory there will be an enthusiasm for it. Steam fairs and heritage rail lines are still a thing.
I personally have a lot more guilt over the number of tyres which I see being consumed than I do over the emissions of the engines.

I just came across this on Extreme E electric off-road motorsport:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/science-environment-...
So yes, I would say ICE motorsport (save for historic racing) will probably disappear ahead of ICE road cars.
It contains Lewis Hamilton and mention of gender balancing so I apologise in advance for this rather short thread being ruined so early on.
