Hi everyone...

Looking for some ideas for a suitable amateur motorsport event which I could aim towards and also doesn't cost the earth.

I have a 1998 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro which in a previous life was a rally car of some sort, so it's pretty much already fully kitted out with all the MSA spec stuff.

I converted it to rwd and have been using it for drifting but fancy putting it back in 4wd mode and doing some actual motorsport... The obvious choice is of course rally cross, but because of the engine size and 4wd it would put me in the Super Modified class which just isn't realistic for a first-timer on a budget.

Has anyone got any constructive ideas of something I could enter which doesn't cost 10's of thousands of pounds?

Thanks in advance

Have a look at the MSVR/ MSN Circuit rally championship - they have a class specifically for 4wd cars with H pattern gearboxes.

Depending on where you live there are similar circuit rally type events at places like Croft, Pembrey, and 3 Sisters kart track.

Finally, have a look on the “Itsmymotorsport” website and that will give you a break down of the types of rallies that are usually on.

Of course, if rallying is your chosen option you will need to pass your BARS test and get the appropriate licence, get a technical passport for your car to ensure it complies with the Blue Book regs (a scrutineer is needed to examine the car) and you will need a co-driver.

There are “rally track days” at places like Anglesey circuit and 3 Sisters.

To be eligible for armature motorsport doesn't it need to be electric?

It is very rare that the car you happen to own already is a good fit for a given competition. As you have seen, there will be series where you can compete in it but won't be competitive in class.

You generally have to make a decision on whether you want to prepare the car you have and accept that you won't be competitive in class, or if you want to be competitive in class you will need to start with a different car.

I don't have any rally specific knowledge but in motorsport the classes are most often built around engine capacity or output and drive layout. 2.8l and 4wd will put you in above your head where the entry level class is, for example, sub 1,400cc and 2wd.

For circuit racing, there is limited options as 4WD is often outlawed, but it could be eligible for Castle Combe GT Championship, Class A or possibly Class D. Whether its competitive is another matter.

For cheap stuff - sprints and hillclimbs.

Other than that there is circuit rallying, such as the MSV Circuit Rally Championship, class D2 is for 4WD

Rallycross is also good fun and the Btrda is a good place to start for budget events they have some production classes and there used to be one for production 4WD.
