Some say his slight nudge while it was rolling near the end changed the direction of the roll and saved the cameraman’s life and he now owes Ollie a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid...

Yeah remember that like it was yesterday. Absolutely crap day, had the pile up in Race 2 when I was having a bit of needle with the Proton onto the back straight and his suspension let go.

I got absolutely reamed for it even though I still think it was a 50:50 job.

The car was wrecked and the boys did an awesome job getting it back out again for Race 3, started pretty much last, saw Alex Martin trigger the crash on the start/finish, I had an MG on my right so I bailed for the grass to give him room to miss the stopped cars

At that point Hunter clipped one of the stationary cars and went tumbling, I stood on the brakes but it was bumpy and there was no grip on the grass, never forget watching the car rolling in front of me, every time it hit the ground it slowed it down a bit more and got a bit closer, finally it landed literally on my bonnet

I actually had no idea about the camera stand until someone told me afterwards and showed me the footage

It had been such a st year, the car was undeveloped and completely awful at the start of the season and we didn’t even have an engineer for the first four rounds. We’d scored a couple of points through attrition but hadn’t had a decent result.

I got an absolute pasting online from all the Welch fans, knockhill wasn’t much better, if it hadn’t been for Rockingham where we got the car in a sweet spot and I was pushing for the top ten then I’d genuinely have called it a day in BTCC

Lovely bloke but when your team are carrying a full set of stickered panels and bumpers for every session of the weekend you have to start considering if you’re in the right sport

I wonder where all the Welch fans went? Probably jumped ship to the Austin camp and then subsequently the Jordan camp! #Awkward! hehe

I’ll refrain from being too unkind but I suspect they’ve moved on to getting angry about other things that don’t matter!

We had some good races together in GT Cup, some contact but nothing intentional just good hard racing. Different type of car I guess.

Jesus. That bloke (camera man?) stood on the ground seemingly oblivious to the scaffold tower toppling over right next to him was lucky.

To be fair that was before I developed animosity against the Proton and the general enterprise associated with it hehe

I forgot You drove the golf! What was that car like? I remember the hype around it, but never lived up to it really... then it slowly crept out the back door

The team were pretty inexperienced back then (including me) and we all made plenty of mistakes and learnt a lot over the season but the car actually was actually nice enough to drive, albeit not that quick.

It was actually when I worked in Vehicle Dynamics at Lotus so we had it on the K&C rig and had some good guys lending their input. We got it to the point where the chassis was working well, it had a nice balance and was nice and forgiving

The thing we struggled with was straight line speed, even in the transition year where the S2000 cars had more boost to make up for the narrower tyres compared to the then new NGTCs. We were at the bottom of the speed traps when we should have been near the top and slow in the corners.

Right at the end of the year we found out that the engine mapper had been running it ridiculously conservatively (after blaming my driving the whole year for the poor speed traps). We wound about 10 degrees of timing into it and it propelled it up the speed traps and actually made it decently competitive, although by then people had got their heads around the NGTC’s and the S2000’s were fading

I think if we’d started the season with the car we finished it with it would have been a very strong season, although I’d have still cocked up 2013 being too fat for the Toyota so my career probably wouldn’t have been any different!

The Golf did end up being more competitive somewhere. It was always a nice looking race car as well.
