RESCUE-RACER: concussion diagnosis and treatment in future
Discussion
RESCUE-RACER (Research Evaluating Sports ConcUssion Events – Rapid Assessment of Concussion and Evidence for Return) is a project started at Cambridge U, funded in part by the FIA. A million patients a year are brought to UK A&E departments with potential concussion, after a variety of incidents. Predicting the potential for severe damage, what the best treatments are, and how long someone should wait before returning to the activity that injured them are difficult questions to answer. Because motorsport causes a a relatively high incidence of concussion injuries, RESCUE-RACER wants to use the population of race drivers to test potential investigations and treatments, including HiTec investigations (High-resolution MRI and CAT scanning), saliva tests and 'cognitive' tests.
Drivers who suffer a concussion injury will be referred to Dr.Naomi Deakin, the Sid Watkins FIA Scholar in 2018, at the Neurology Dept. Cambridge University Hospital. This is run by Prof. Peter Hutchinson, Professor of Neurosurgery at Cambridge University and Chief Medical Officer for the British Grand Prix. They will be asked to attend Addenbrooks Hospital as soon as possible after their injury, and then weekly for three weeks, all their travel and loss of work expenses being paid by the study.
RESCUE-RACER will accept drivers from the TOCA series (BTCC and supporting races), so few reading this will be eligable, but the more who know about it the better. Anyone who would like to know more, the latest issue of the FIA's "AUTO+Medical" journal contains an article about it. See: https://www.fia.com/multimedia/publication/auto-me... page 10.
Concussion is real problem for doctors, for patients and their families, and for thier industries. This study has enormous potential to show the best management.
