Guys, anyone know much about going to NASCAR in the US ?

Got into NASCAR last year and would love to go to a race, I'm going to be in Phoenix in November at the same time as the season championship so have the perfect opportunity.

Looks like tickets aren't on sale as yet but does anyone know when they do go on sale and\or how difficult it is to get hold of decent tickets ?

Thanks
Steve

I think the boom period was the 90's and early part of the 00's, it has been changed so much since then, and now young kids can start in NASCAR just as F1, so you get fewer journeyman drivers than you did.

Some people love it, some hate it, but it has changed a hell of a lot, most of the old traditional tracks have been replaced with huge mile and a half ovals that are brought in with big money, leaving some of the older more quirky tracks unable to compete, that loses some fans, and the prices went up a lot too in the boom time, that lost them also.

Depends what you want to see, action I would suggest Bristol or Martinsville half mile tracks, Darlington is probably the best old school, but for close bonkers stuff Talledega is king, or CHarlotte, Baytona.

I enjoyed watching the Roval race last year actually, so would consider that, in a holiday as you could then also fit in several shop visits.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll actually be in Phoenix on holiday in Nov already and noticed the championship final was on whilst I was there, so my questions were more about that specific event.

But that's for the feedback on tracks.

Phoenix is a tough track, odd shape, and perhaps as it is the final rounds might be expensive to attend not sure. But obviously out the way for the Carolina core of teams etc.

I’m going to Homestead in March for the first race of the season, can’t say I know anything about NASCAR, think I’ve only ever watched one race in full, but I’m in Florida for the Sebring 1000 miles / 12 hours so it’d be rude not to.

I'm into pretty much any motorsport but before I got into it I thought it looked quite boring, just going round in circles with your foot flat to the floor, but once you get into the strategy and get into some of the drivers and rivalries it really comes alive.

As we're in Phoenix anyway I'm just going to see what tickets I can get when they're released.

Make sure you get yourself a team radio raceiver fella, it makes the race much more interesting, but be careful if you tune into a Busch the language will be colourful!

Oh cool. Didn't realize you could do that. Thanks for the tip.

Wish it was 2-way though as I've got some choice words for him. Not my favorite driver it has to be said. :-)

Slightly off topic. NASCAR upload all of their races (trucks, xfinity and cup) races onto their youtube channel. Helps many an hour sat in airports and on flights.

How does one do this, and is FM commentary available?

They are very popular Fred, you should easily be able to pick one up at the track, or maybe elsewhere, and you can tune in to driver spotter etc?

not sure if you have to pay? Maybe, I don't know off hand.

ha! I, too, came here (earlier today) and saw nothing.

Watching it now. Rain has delayed the start. Now drying the track.

Fifth Gear and the always amiable Tiff Needell enjoyed themselves at a Daytona 500:

Also watching Daytona 500 now. Hoping there is no ‘big one’ today, but feel the outcome of these restrictor plate races is a lottery. This is my 4th year watching the Cup series, and love it. Would love to cross the pond and see a race live.

Trump got off to a good start lying 3rd but that heavy beast drinks fuel fast so had to make an early stop, after that he was nowhere - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4jTI2DY84w

I tried watching it, but the last 20 or so laps is just ridiculous.

Why not just have that and nothing beforehand, would save fuel, time and the like, as nothing much happens before then anyway!

They had a shorter race the previous weekend, and only 5 or 6 cars finished that one,

It was a shame about the big one, but you seem to get them every race at Daytona now. Look up Tony Stewart’s rants about the super speedway races on YouTube.

I enjoyed the race, and it was great to see some of the young guys being competitive at the front.
