As a new season approaches I wanted to ask if anyone has any alternative motorsport events ideas for 2019. Based in the UK so in the UK would be great

Alternative to what? There are probably 10 to 15 motorsport related events happening every weekend during the season.

I'm completely and utterly biased here, but if you mean "on any number of wheels" then I'd suggest you get yourself to a BS meeting and wait until the sidecars come on - usually at the end of the day. Absolutely brilliant to watch, even better to passenger wink

Try drag racing at Santa Pod. Obviously it’s weather dependant so keep an eye out but Main Event, European finals have top fuel and the best guys from Europe competing. Dragstalgia is a great nostalgia event and the doorslammers meeting has everything fast with 2 or more doors. They’re great events with plenty of stuff off track, free pit access etc.

Yes, the Top Fuel drags are amazing. A friend had been telling me about them for years and how it was unlike anything else I'd seen. I went and he was correct.

Where do small club events get listed these days, you used to see things in Motoring News and Autosport but who buys actual mags these days?

I'd recommend 750mc events. Everyone is happy to chat about the cars, nice friendly atmosphere, some interesting and quick cars on show including RGB, Bikesports, 750 formula & F1000 etc.

If you do when RGB are there, make sure you come and say hi! (Works silver Spire no.54)

It depends what you want,

I never watch circuit racing, haven't for decades other than big stuff like WEC.

I mainly watch non MSA stuff like autograss stock cars racing, purely coz it is good value for money, you can see the track, the drivers sometimes entertain and you feel more part o it.

Watch lots of bike racing, off road, on road.

Drag racing is a fun one off, one or two meets a year.

Hillclimbs are also fun at nicer venues like Shelsley, but most of them are nice.

there are some good rallies on now too, some proper closed road stuff is coming back, its a bit restricted compared to what Im used to but its good.

Does the British Truck Racing Championship count as alternative? For shear entertainment the Brands Hatch events are hard to beat with the little Legend Cars and Pick-Up Championship in support.

Trucks are great and always a big crowd, sometimes you have a bit of waiting around though as when they hit something solid (i.e. armco) it takes some fixing! Snetterton is a good place to watch them as you can see loads of the circuit and there is a decent amount of room for them to have an off without hitting stuff.

BSB a great spectacle, but BUSY!

I tried drag racing last year at Santa Pod and that was fun and an experience but again lots of waiting round when something lets go! Amazing sounds though!

Did Brisca a couple of years back and that was good LOUD although a little more rough around the edges than so of the other stuff mentioned!

I'm trying Harewood for the msa hillclimb this year as my new experience.

Superkarts, just insane....

British Hillclimb championship run off at Shelsley Walsh is also a highlight of the year.

Neither are particularly “alternative” but lots of fun

British hillclimb championship. Attended for the first time when I was seven, and now I follow it all over the country and have been to mainland Europe to watch it too. One of the most exciting motorsports to spectate on in my opinion.
