I'd like to take my 6 year old to a Motorsport museum in a couple of weeks as he loves racing cars, I can't take him to a race meeting due to the noise, crowds and high chance of getting soaking wet as these can all trigger bad reactions from him due to him being Autistic. I'm in Essex and prepared to travel up to an hour and a half, any more than that wouldn't be worth it due to time we need to be home. Not central London, Google is not really showing anything up. Any suggestions?

I can't think of anything suitable in the south east .

The Donington collection is about to close down in about 4 weeks ,probably too far away .

I don't know if McLaren ,for example ,do visits by prior booking.

Would brooklands be close enough? There's also the Mercedes Benz place there. I know my boss took his son to a day there which had been set up specially for kids who need things a little calmer. So might be worth contact to see if there is anything similar planned.

I have considered Brooklands but he likes more modern machinery and most of their stuff is too early, there's probably only 4 cars he would consider race cars as opposed to just cars. i've been to Donnington a few years back but that's just too far to go there and back in the time we have.

Thanks but that's just too far, even further than Donington

Doubt you are going to find much elsewhere to be honest

Probably better off trying to find a bunch of Arabs racing around in wrapped supercars in London!

Thanks for the input all, looks like i'll have to find something else to occupy his mind for the day though.

Not cars exactly but might appeal to the same kind of minds (engineering, science):

I have looked at those but the cars at brooklands are too old to interest him and the Mercedes benz world doesn't have enough race cars for him to look at

Whilst that would be great for me it won't hold his interest, he's very sensory due to his Autism so i suspect most of the draw to racing cars would be their colours.

Go to Brands then. Either a race event (Trucks and Fireworks soon), or even a track day.

You sit in your car and watch them go by, and then have a wonder down the pits or paddock to see them up close.

To be honest Brooklands car side I find utterly dull, other than the banking and the place itself.

The Vickers stuff was fascinating though, well worth a visit for any plane buffs

Filching Manor Motor Museum in East Sussex. I've never been, so can't comment on the suitability.
