I'm struggling a bit now I've changed cars! Always used proper wheel tie down straps to secure my rally car but now I've switched to a race saloon I'm having problems frown Very difficult to get the straps over the tyre as little room under the arch & they are so wide, plus with the car sitting really low it's tricky to get the ratchets to fir between trailer edges & side skirts. Are there any other simple options to consider? Thanks.

what car is it, what trailer is it.

in the old days I had a BJ A series trailer, I strapped the car down by going transverse across the bed, from one hooking point to the other through the wheels, front and back. I made sure the front of the car was 'behind' the hooking points at the front and the rear of the car was 'ahead' of the hooking points at the rear.

I now have the same race car and a BJ minno, there is approx 2 inch either side of the car on the trailer. I use wheel straps around the tyre and hook them fore and aft on the trailer. Also I put a strap around the rear beam, using the two hooking points beside the trailer ramps. i then use the cable winch to hook onto the towing eye..

Do you have height adjustable suspension, can you be bothered to fit some lower profile/smaller diameter wheels to your race car when in transit?.

Astra VXR on Ifor Williams twin axle

Rear end is pretty close to back of trailer!

Do you mean straps over the top of the tyres? Very little space to get in there! Do have front bar tyre chocks & use the winch on tow eye.

No, fixed height. Don't want hassle of changing wheels really!

Thanks for help smile

Capn,
Not done this, but I have a Minno, and know whereof you speak.

Mine positions the ratchets in the middle, where there can be little space under the sill to move the ratchet lever, unless I accurately centre the car.
Possible to reverse the straps, placing the ratchets at front and back, where the car may be higher off the ground?

Poss get away with that at front but not at rear, might investigate putting a strap though the wheel???

As you have holes in the deck using over the tyre strap & short handle ratchets better for that.

Like so.

Just need a spare hook per strap.

Or just strap through the wheels.

Hi,

I had the same problem with the normal tie-down straps.

I now use a kit from a US company call MAC - the wheels have there own securing strap through the wheel, and he wrachet connects to that.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Macs-Tie-Downs-Pro-Pack-...

I got them for a UK seller for £100 (expensive I know, but worth it).

Very good quality stuff.
