Nurburgring 24 Hour Event
Discussion
Has anyone ever been to this? Looking at going this year and wondered if anyone has any tips? Been to the ring before and loved it. Accommodation is pretty much booked up so will stay about 30km away and drive to the event. It's on for 4 days, which day is the actual 24 hour event on? Also what happens for the rest of the time? Can you just park up in the forests and walk to the edge of the track to spectate for free like normal or do you have to pay? Any help would be much appreciated.
If you want to get inside the main circuit you need tickets, but if you only intend spectating on the nordschleife it's free. As for parking it man get very congested so I would recommend getting parked up and staying there, use a bike or the free busses to move around. Your eyes will certainly be opened by the partying out on the nordscheife it can seem intimidating at first but it is all harmless fun. I'm returning this year and will be celebrating my birthday on the final day I just hope BMW give me a nice birthday present.
You'd be hard pressed go get any space out on the loop, the hardcore fans are there setting up their constructions a week in advance. There are official campsites, not sure how these work because we only stay at the circuit overnight during the 24hrs, and travel to Bonn on the other nights.
The 24 hrs starts at around 4pm on the Saturday with qually and support races on thurs, fri and Saturday morning. The classic 24 race has a very large entry and some very nice cars, this is held at some point on Friday and I think it's 2-3 hrs duration.

I've camped at the Camping am Nurburgring which is down by the big Dunlop hairpin on the GP track. Its about 60 euro to camp from Thursday to Monday and relatively well organised. There isn't masses of space though so unless your getting there early in the week I wouldnt take a massive tent personally. I took a little two man tent this year and was alright for space. Oh and you might want earplugs. The Germans know how to party late into the wee hours, with ridiculous sound systems.
From there you can walk into the circuit at the Dunlop hairpin, and wander up to the GP start/finish. As others have said I would avoid driving and use the buses instead, although don't do what I did the first year I went which was get stuck out at flugplatz after the race finished as there was no buses back to the GP loop after the race finished... The Dottinger Hohe is rather long when your walking it.

Thanks, sounds fantastic. I've been keen to go for years but hope to finally get there in 2016. Will be interesting what the circuit reprofiling has done, and hopefully spectator areas aren't push too far back.
Something I have a want to do but don't know if it's realistic is to walk a lap around the circuit? Of course it'll be at least the 16miles of the course itself but are the spectator paths continuous close to the track or do you have to cut back and forth from main accessways?

Yes, will be heading over at the crack of dawn on Thursday. The Travel Destinations package is a little expensive, but guarantees you a good spot in the Camping am Nurbirgring.
Travelling around by car is not that difficult if you are patient, but be careful to be on the outside of the white line when you park, otherwise your car WILL be towed!
I'll be amazed if Frikadelli aren't on the start line. They are pretty much a fixture at the event so I'm sure they will sort it out. Man they Porsche are obviously missing the top step, their line up is pretty top drawer!

Same, that 3:30am alarm will hurt for sure. Also booked in with Travel Destinations for camping.
Not sure the BoP board will react to Frikadelli's ultimatum, certainly judging by VLN laptimes the 911 GT3Rs are a touch off the pace but not sure 5s in a 480s lap worth such a dummy spit.

I'm heading to the N24 this year as well. We have camped once before but this year staying in a hotel. Camping out on the Nordschleife is a lot of fun and there is plenty of room. We arrived on a Friday and camped at Metzgesfeld. Adenauer Forst has room even if you arrive on Sat.
I have a fans blog for the this year's event if anyone is interested in following it! Some useful info about spectating, where to stay, things to see etc.

We are heading out Thursday night, and will be driving straight to the circuit for Friday morning. Extra special for me this year as its my birthday on the Sunday. Hope one of the BMW teams give me a nice birthday present and win, although having been out brands hatch last weekend I think this year is too early for the M6.

Got it. I'll listen out for the accent! Not many non Germans in attendance last time I was there.

Stuart, the M6s look pretty good though. Hopefully they will still be pounding round by the Sunday afternoon.
