He waltzed through Formula Ford. Now he's looking like the class of the field in the Carrera Cup. So the question is, how good do you have to be to dominate at the level he's racing? For example, how would he perform against the best in Touring Cars, or even at Le Mans?

Hopefully he’ll get the break that his results deserve and we’ll get to find out. If any manufacture backs the talent that comes up its one make series with a shot at the big time as a works driver then it’s Porsche.

Dan will be one to watch this weekend at Silverstone as the Carrera Cup GB will be mixing it with the F1 supporting Porsche Supercup. So he'll be racing against the best outside of Porsche factory drivers.

I think what is really impressive is his mastery of a Formula Ford EcoBoost single seater and a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. Two very different cars yet he dominated Formula Ford and is currently the man to beat in the Porsche GB Cup.

I will say that he has been with the best teams in both championships - JTR in FF and Redline Racing in Porsches, but there have been plenty of divvy drivers floundering in top teams and not many that knock it out of the park.

Hopefully he and Porsche will stick together and who knows, in a couple of years he may be picking up a winners trophy and swanky Rolex atop the Le Mans podium in an LMP1 car.

He's the real deal. When the likes of Webster and Meadows took part in the Le Mans support race last year - which included Earl Bamber - they more than held their own, but Cammish is blowing 'em out the rear door. And he was laughably superior in FF.

If he isn't a works Porsche driver within the next 18 months I'll eat my hat...

I am not sure BTCC always show up the real talent - it does demand a special technique and those able to exploit it - Plato and co - are undoubtedly gifted drivers. But some drivers with proven ability at the top level- F1 and F2 in this example- just didn't crack touring cars . Messrs Warwick and Palmer of course.Some did-hello Jim Clark .

Usually if you are quick in single seaters you will go as far as budget and luck gets you - I saw drivers like Pace, Piquet , Senna , Button, Hamilton ,Raikkonnen and Hakkinen in single seater formulae and all were obviously destined for better things , but some drivers impress hugely in F3 and just don't get on with bigger single seaters- stand up Jan Magnussen(lots of F3 wins ) , Dave Walker (ditto ) and JJ Lehto (stunning in F2000). Others blossom when they get into cars with big power- Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell were good , but not that good in low power formulae but when Mansell cracked F1 turbopower he was amazing . Hill? Hugely underrated still- he was super quick in F3000 and his F1 record still isn't appreciated properly . Some drivers are just enigmas- Zanardi was great in F3000 and CART but really struggled in F1.

To return to the question - he's good and let's watch how he gets on .

^ Dont recall cammish having driven in BTCC?

9th in the Supercup Silversone race. Not a bad result but probably not what he was hoping for.

Wasted in BTCC imo, but at least he got a top drive.

Indeed. Should have been in World GTs, or even F1, by now. Suspect his size counts against him - he's quite a big lad from memory.

Ha ha - yep got that one wrong. In mitigation I wasn't to know that the 919 project would get canned so unceremoniously and leave Porsche overstuffed with great drivers looking for a programme. That seriously cut back the number of 'new' GTE drives available.

That said, I am surprised that the BTCC was the best he could get having done pretty well in Supercup last year... Michael Meadows is in an arguably better place and Cammish had the beating of him in PCCGB...

Stoneman came into PCCGB and had the beating of Meadows, I cant recall the grid ever being deep with talent I wonder how it stacks up financially with BritishGT.

LeMan's last year though! fantastic race!

That's down to the pots of cash.. Meadows is the paying amateur in his GT car isn't he? Marciello is the pro.

Hi Guys,

As a Pistonheads fan I stumbled on this.

How good is he really? Interesting question...

My career has been pretty good I think considering my opportunities. It is a tough sport and you either need a lot of money, connections or luck. All 3 ideally.

I have always punched above which I think is what has really helped me keep going. I was thankful to get an opportunity to race in Carrera Cup where I was very successful. I also did a good job in my debut year in Supercup. 4th Overall against Porsche Juniors and 1 Veteran with 3 podiums including Monaco. No doubt I could have challenged for wins & the title had I chosen to return...

Also as someone mentioned I won the Carrera Cup Le Mans race. An amazing experience and something I am very proud of.

The thing is there are no guarantees in life. I have no history of racing GT3, no manufacturers have shown interest in me thus far and there was no indication even if I won Supercup (like Ammermuller did) that I would move on to a professional contract in GT racing.

I would not have moved to BTCC for just any team but the opportunity to join Team Dynamics is very rare. I could have a long career in the BTCC from this starting point and I am in one of the best positions in British Motorsport. From where I started as a boy I call that a big win.

It is of course a leap of faith for myself. I would have loved an opportunity to race on in GT's but where was the money coming from? Unless a manufacturer took a chance on me and as I said earlier, for that you need to be well connected. In a sport full of wealthy people who can pay to be well connected. Unfortunately I am not one of them.

Hindsight will tell if I have made the right decision. I was nearly on Pole in my BTCC debut so once I crack the rest of it (and I will) the results will come.

Also I have not turned my back on anything. I am a firm believer that if you can drive you can drive. I was very nearly on Pole on my Debut at the weekend in the BTCC in a FWD car having spent my whole career in RWD. So If my career turns and I go back so be it. But for now i'm fully focussed on making this season the best it can be.

I said when this thread opened that I believed you were the "real deal" and I still believe that. Opportunity is everything in motorsport and I hope you smash it with Dynamics, even if I'd rather be watching you in Blancpain/WEC!!

Marciello is undoubtedly the star, but they are a full pro squad in Blancpain.
