i need the car to be

no more than 2 litre

not too fast i.e 0-60 in 5 seconds as im only 18 and dont want to kill my self

and the car is no more than £5000

Clio 182 or a 106gti might be good for a beginner.

I'd say something like a Clio 1*2 or a 206 GTI 180.

Both can be had for a lot less than 5k, then you can get into it and start chasing times and modify the car to make it better through the corners with better suspension and less weight and so on.

Are you sure hill climbing and motorsport in general is for you? You seem quite afraid of a ~200bhp car, but the risks are almost the same with a 150bhp car.

It doesn't have that much power. Do you know which car is being referred to?

I was quite surprised he'd consider a 182......but the DC2 was too powerful

maybe look at 106 Rallyes, the S1 with the 1293cc engine.
This is where I'd be heading. Would be competitive in the sub 1400 class, and good fun. You need to consider where you want to run the car and what would suit the class structure.

Thats as maybe but there is a reason I have never seen one on a hillclimb.... too big, too wide, poor visibility and the turbo puts him in a different class with all sorts of more powerful cars.

Ph2 Clio 182 is the perfect car for beginner and has loads of tuning potential, personally I wouldnt bother with "must haves" like a fast 0-60 time or a certain bhp, you are more likely to be disillusioned when you dont win.

Go to an event and watch what the seasoned competitors are doing in the small engined cars like 106s and Minis. You can have a car on paper that you think will be competitive on a hillclimb but seriously, you need big balls to win events in any class at places like Shelsley and Prescott and power is not a substitute for experience... and those two places in particular are not forgiving.

Indeed, just look at the latest PH Hillclimb blog post, evidence that you can have the flashiest toys going but without the necessaries, you'll still be riding the verge sooner or later and crashing out. I'd recommend starting small and easy, something like a 106 GTi, Saxo VTS, Clio 172 or whatever would be ideal, and then get some experience actually driving the thing and competing in it.
