I have been thinking about importing a wedge into the U.S. I have looked at the rules for importing cars over 25 years old into the U.S. and it appears that cars with a build date prior to 1983 would be exempt from DOT and EPA requirements. If that’s the case it would seem to wait a couple of years and UK spec 350i or 390SE rather than try and track down a 280i here in the U.S.

Of course it would involve finding a car in the U.K. as my father has retired over there it’s a task I could assign him. Once the car is sourced it would probably cost about $2,000 to ship to the U.S.

Has anyone here every considered importing a “classic” car, exempt from DOT & EPA requirements? If so what were the main challenges? I would think state licensing could be an issue but I am not a California resident so I think I could find a way to register the car here.

What about parts availability? I would think everything could be sourced from UK suppliers if worse came to worse.

Opinions?

Have you thought about sourcing one in Canada where they imported the V8 wedges throughout the model run?
The Tasmin and 280i models were imported into the US from 1983 through 1987 and I stock parts for them and can also obtain the parts for the V8 models if you need them.
