Hi,

Has anyone shipped their TVR to America to use while on holiday? I would really like to drive route 66 in my Tuscan and was wondering what it would cost to ship my car over, and also how long it would take between leeaving my house in England and being useable in America - has anyone tried it?

Hi,
I shipped my Tuscan to the US for the Gumball Rally.
Cost of shipping to NY and back from LA, including insurance, was £1750.00. This was a deal that the organisers had done by Maersk shipping.
Door to door out was about 4.5 weeks and back was 6.5 weeks.

I did part of route 66, well not historic route 66 which we all know from the movies, I did the new'ish interstates that historic route 66 weaves along and things to watch out for are...

Altitdude, Santa Fe is at approx 6,000 feet and has a strange effect on the air mixture!!
Total crap fuel, in New Mexico for example the highest pump octane fuel you can get is 83 if memory serves correctly.
Heat, you are going across dessert for some of the journey, fit a manual fan override.
America is BIG.
Bring plent of Oil and keep your fingers crossed.

For what it's worth, US octane ratings are not the same as ours. 95 RON = something like 87 in US Octanes. Someone else on this list is bound to know the details.

They can't measure Gallons properly either. 3.x litres to a US gallon.

Doug,

I have had cars sent to the States before but have left all the paper work to someone else.

Did you have any hassle getting your Tuscan to N.Y?

How long could you have kept your Tuscan in the States? I am guessing 12 months before if has to meet U.S saftey regulations.

If you take the car out of the U.S can you bring it back in for another 12 months?

What was your insurance increase like when you casually let them know you'd be driving in N.Y!?

Thinking about taking the Tuscan I buy to N.Y for a few months of the year before I bring it to H.K. I think it will spend more time at sea than kissing the tarmac. Cheers

Hi - I've just been in the pub talking to my wife about future holidays and we're seriously considering driving the Tuscan across America next year.

We have a coupe of questions though! Firstly, what are the penalties for speeding? (Obvious question really!)
Secondly, we'd like to incorporate some car shows if we can and also get some magazine coverage (although this is still only in the "theoretical" stage). Are there any magazines that might be interested in such a project, whether to borrow the car for a day, or just to photograph and write an article?

Primarily this trip would be a holiday for my wife and I, but we love the attention that the car recieves and would be happy to show it to lots of people.

Lastly, we've never done anything like this - the trip or the publicity - so any advice would be very much appreciated, who to contact, where to stay etc....

This is still in its very early stages - so far, my wife and i have decided that it would be cool to drive the Tuscan across the States, which, apart from any technicalities involved in shipping the car over and breakdown cover, seems fairly straight forward. The magazine/car show thing is new to the pair of us but seems like it would be a wasted opportunity to drive across America without telling anyone!

You should pay a visit to Penske as well since there was talk about distributing TVR's through them--the US guys would know what they are missing!

Maranello,

No Hassle getting the Tuscan into NY.
Could have kept it there for 12 months.
Don't know about taking it out and back in again.
I could not get insurance cover from the UK, had to get seperate insurance cover in the US for the US.

Shamus,
speeding penalties are high, usually on the spot, or you are hauled off in from of a judge, having a non US licence is an advantage. Buy a decent Radar detector, if you are used to anticapiting speed traps then you should be fine.

Shamus, let me know if you need help with good shipping companies and insurance agents as well. I can put you in touch with the right companies for both.

Hagerty is indeed your best bet for insurance here, but I have a couple of others as well if you are not too pleased with their quote.

Do look me up when you are here, as my Cerbie feels all alone sometimes. And there's lots of really cool car-related events and shows in this area...let me know when and where you will be and I am sure there will always be something for you and your wife. You will probably tire of the attention rather than run out of events to attend.

I drive a Tuscan and currently live in the UK but will return to the US (Florida) in early 2003 to live for good with the car. Are there any limitations or restrictions on bringing Tuscans into the US - from reading some of the comments in this group it seems possible even though I may have to drive it from NY. My preference will be to ship it direct to Tampa. Also, would I need to have the carbs adjusted to cater for the higher fuel octane levels.

If the visa you enter the country on is of a temporary type (student, company transfer, tourist), you can bring the car in for up to one year with no restrictions.

Otherwise, find someone coming in on a tourist visa and have them bring your car in (they will have to be the legal owner of the car).

You will be able to ship it to any point in the US that you want--no restrictions there.

Err, you don't have carbs in a Tuscan. It's fuel injected. are you sure you own a Tuscan????

And the ECU is self-adjusting for octane differences. Just fill it up with premium and you will be ok. In the US, 93 octane is readily availble and is, I believe, equivalent to UK 98.
