importing a cerbera
Discussion
Hi all
I'll be moving to the US in Jan 05 for 6 months on a student visa.
An american friend of a friend (and TVR fanatic) says it would be possible for me to import and drive a TVR legally without modifying it. That certainly seems to be the case for up to 12 months.
He wants to fly out to the UK, buy a TVR, register it in my name and then have it shipped to the states, where he'd 'buy' it back from me. Is this legal? legitimate? any thoughts?
thanks

Been on the verge of shipping one for a while now. Due to constant travel it has been a case of not having enough time to see it through.
I was told by several shipping brokers that because alot of people have done the same thing you are trying to do - namely ship a car in and sell it to someone who cannot legally drive it on the road - they are being forced to take a deposit when you bring the car into the country. You get the money back when you and the car leave the country.
Apparently these measures are being put in place by the D.O.T as they've had problems at different ports as there was no single, strict legislation. Looks like there is now eh?
I was quoted $2,500 but I have heard as much as the value of the car being touted about.
Good luck with it and stay out of NY and Miami cos I wouldn't be too happy to go through all the import effort to see another Cerb Faishal is on the other side of the country and that's how we likes it

Shipping is easy as a temporary importation, but I am sure Cerbera's only run on super unleaded. The petrol over there is maximum of 93RON, normal unleaded is 95 in the UK. If it breaks down you won't be happy. Otherwise register the car in your name and ship it over, put your friend down as a named driver on the insurance (one of the bigger problems) and rent the car to him. The car does have to be exported within one year, cannot be sold and will be crushed if it doesn't.
'Their' 93 MON is equivalent to 'our' 98 RON. In quite a few states you can also get 94...
