Thinking about buying a classis....help!
Discussion
I dont know why, but I have this bizare urge to buy one of the classics...3000M....vixen...something of that erk...
But what are they like to drive?
How do they handle?....Will a TVR of that age still be useable and driveable?
Im tempted to go for the smaller engined version (1600 I think)...in an attempt to keep the insurance down..
But will it cope with "spirited" modern driving?
Im 6'2"....will I struggle to fit?
Any thoughts and comments on which model/engine spec to look for would be appreciated :-)

>> Surprisingly good, they all had (Vixens/Ms) proper suspension, wishbones all round, all have enough power to be fun and to keep up with(pass) modern traffic. Vixens are very nimble, 1600M also handles very neutrally but weighs an extra 300lbs, 3 litre M's not quite as neutral (extra weight upfront) but still handle pretty well, you need to keep on the throttle for neutral cornering.

>> On a classic policy engine size doesn't have much impact
But will it cope with "spirited" modern driving?
>> Yes, most TVRs can keep up with modern driving, spirited or not
Im 6'2"....will I struggle to fit?
>> Once inside you will be fine, getting in and out will be a practised art expecially on early Vixens

A little over a year ago I sold my old Austin Sprite and bought a 1600M.
As DavidY said they handle very nicely and are a joy to drive. Insurance is cheap on many classics I think I pay about £80 for full comp with unlimited miles and European break down cover.
I'm 5'8" and find the cabin a nice fit, but saying that a friend is 6' with big feet and finds the joint in the steering column tries to push his foot off the clutch... The best test has to be driving one.
If you buy one, you won't be disappointed. There are good to drive and easy enough to maintain.
Just my 2 pence worth... if it’s worth that.

Dont tempt me with gratuitous photos....its bad for me you know!
Thanks for the input guys. The reason for the insurance question is that im only 20....I got a quick quote last night from one company and they were after £1300 TPFT/year....
Im fairly well endowed with technical knowledge...so im hoping to by a road legal/dreivable car, but that requires some work etc...so I can drive it whilst doing rolling improvements etc....
Is there a TVR classic forum where I might be able to find a decent car?
As you said, I really need to find one to test drive...or find somoene locally who would be willing to show me their beast!

Stop thinking about it and just do it. You might want to try these lot for insurance - Richard Hosken Specialist Car Division on 01277 206911. There are a couple of 'M's and a couple of Taimars on ebay at the moment. Go for the big one. The machanics are fairly basic.... so will be no trouble for the well endowed.

You would be welcome to look at my beast!!!
....but am not really local.

Yes, go for it! As for insurance, I am not sure if companies these days insist you have a 'daily driver' if you were to put the TVR on a classic policy. If they do, get yourself a cheap run-about (you can get a lot of good motors for less than £500) and then get your TVR on classic insurance with limited milage to keep the cost down.
