I used to have an S2 and now have a Taimar. Performance wise they are very similar, I prefer the Taimar from the point that it is a little more rough around the edges and it's more seat of your pants driving. The shape of the M series certainly sems to be "fashionable" at the moment and I think an M is a better investment.
Downside compared to an S is you will miss the soft top and the performance will not match your old V8S (but you know that already).
Reliability is a difficult one, I think the same rules apply as to all older TVR's and that is don't buy on age, buy on condition. I could have bought a newer Taimar than mine for less money, but the one I bought had been owned by the same guy for 20 years and had been his cherished posession (even over his wife I think).
