Well...

After a another few hours of "fun" on Sunday afternoon, I finally got the old girl working.

The starting problem was down to HT leads and a condenser. The diagnostic was made harder by a nasty dizzy cap that somehow fits on either way round! (I will pay more attention next time.

Anyway all working now so thanks for the help. MOT on Thursday so fingers crossed.

The breather pipe config works a treat.

The only outstanding problem is that I can't turn the idle speed down any more. It's a 32/36 dgv. The idle screw isn't making contact with the throttle arm. Almost like it's sticking, but can't see what on.

Cheers
Rob

Have you got an adjuster on the cable? There should be one on the carb end of the cable.

Yeah. Even if I loosen the cable it still doesn't return to the idle stop. Tick over is currently at about 1600.

Rob,
I believe that which you call the idle screw is one of two methods of idle adjustment on DGV carbs. Look for another screw on the DGV that is the idle mixture screw. This screw is not connected to the butterfly. Turn it in VERY GENTLY! (If you turn it in too brutally, you'll damage the carb body) The idle mixture on most Webers is a different circuit, a bypass of sorts. The two screws are used in combination to allow the correct ammount of air (idle screw) and the correct ammount of fuel (idle mixture screw) into the combustion chamber.
Also see if this helps http://www.mgexperience.net/article/3236dgev.html
Good luck,
Bernard.

on closer in spection I've found that the second butterfly wasn't returning to closed.

I've now stripped/cleaned and rebuilt it. All is well.
