Morning All

I have a little problem... I have a '72 1600M, nothing fancy just the standard setup.

About 2 weeks ago I started to notice a few things:
1, there was a what sounded like a ticking noise coming from the engine bay. When I put my head in the engine bay it sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the engine. It sounds like a fast tapping noise but maybe a slurping noise.
2, the oil pressure gauge stop moving up and down as I revved the engine measuring about 45
3, the temp has started to climb over 90

So I guessed on a oil or oil pump related problem. This weekend I changed the oil and oil filter along with the Oring on the end of the oil pump (it's been seeping for a while).

I took her out for a spin and no change... until I stopped in a hurry! The ticking stopped, the oil pressure dropped to about 30 and the temp started to go down. I revved the engine and the oil pressure moved as I revved... “better” I though. But then after a little while it started again.

So do we think it's the oil pump might be blocked? If so I guess I have to remove the engine to get the sump off.

Or is it something else?

Any ideas would be great.

Cheers
Rob

The oil pump is external but you need to decide whether it is ticking or slurping to identify the cause

Could it be a slurpy tick from a blocked pick up?

When you are driving the car it sounds likea tick, and you can hear it over the noise of the engine.

As the gamekeeper says, the oil pump is external so no problems for removal. The sump can be removed while engine is in the car but you will need a pit or a lift for safe working upside down. I had a clicking a with mine when I first got it, the pick up had not been fitted with loctite and had moved slightly and was therefore making very slight contact with the crank. The oil pump may be the problem but I would investigate the pick up also, as if it moved more than slightly it could be knocked off completely which would result in a lot of metal flying around in there with disasterous results!

I had a quick look at the sump and my bell housing covers the bolts along the back of the sump. I was under the impression that it was an engine out job... Am I wrong?

I was thinking it was the pickup at is seems the sump has undergone repair at some point as there is a plate welded to it, and I thought the only way to inspect that was to remove the sump.

There should be a dirt guard bolted to the front of the bell housing held on by about half a dozen small bolts. Remove that and you should be able to remove the rear sump bolts with a 3/8th or 1/4in drive with a wobbly extension bar. Use a bead of silicon sealant on the new gasket when reassembling to hold it in place and dont overtighten the bolts

My '72 1600M makes knocking sort of noises on tick-over from the bottom of the engine caused by the crank slopping through the oil in the sump, rev the engine slightly it disappears as the oil gets picked up by the oilpump, all quite normal on a crossflow. I'm running a big-winged sump so the little trapdoors clatter too sounds like very bad timing chain slap, but everything is drowned out by the twin Webers opening!
