Fumes inside the car

Have noticed having driven the Vixen that my clothes smell a bit fumey.

I have taped up the intake ducts into the cabin but still notice the smell.

Other possibilities - through gearstick gaitor, rear DG vents in rear screen sucking in exhaust fumes, fuel tank breather??

Any other suggestions???

check the insulation behind the rear lights.

I know it's maybe a bit difficult to describe, but are the fumes neat unburnt fuel'ly like, or burnt exhaust gas like?.

I have neat fuel smells in my M at the moment, and I'm told that really it's a consequence of having the tank and all it's fittings inside the car (I assume the Vixen is the same?). Will probably go through them in the winter and tighten / seal / replace them all to see if that helps.

If the fumes are exhaust like, might be worth a quick check on all your exhaust manifold bolts / studs. There's plenty of holes between the engine bay and the cabin.

They all smell inside. I love it. Back to the old days when the air was clean and sex dirty.

Smells more like exhaust fumes than neat petrol.

Its most likely to be the gearstick and handbrake gator(s) as well as any other open or poorly sealed holes in the bulkhead.

I posted about this loads of times when I had my M - I started with the bulkhead and sealed all visible holes with sealant - then the gear gaitor got sealed off but what really made a huge difference was removing the rear lights and sealing them back into place.

I'd agree as removing and sealing the rear lights into place made the biggest difference to mine. I still get a slight smell of exhaust fumes in the car but I have now found where it is coming in as I put some tape, temporarily, to block any gaps between the side window frames and the rubber door frame seal and the smell disappeared so it looks like my window frames will need adjusting.

Do you think the two vents on the rear screen could be creating problems or should these be high enough not to be an issue?

Is it just me, or does anybody else take there cup of crushed bees back to the garage about 1/2 an hour after returning from a drive out, just to take in the aroma's of a cooling TVR

My son came with me to the Rock at the weekend in my vixen s2, and said he could smell the `TVR smell' until Tuesday.

I think the best odure in the world is a recently thrashed TVR cooling in the garage!

And Oh, the smell of unburnt fuel from the exhaust.

Are we sad or are we just yearning for the days of simplicity when not everything around us was run by a small electronic chip??

I'm new to this fume smell, so don't have the experience of some, but what I've noticed so far is that when I open a window slightly whilst driving, the fumes are worse then when the window is shut!?

This coincides with the slight draft I feel on my ankle when I open the window. So guess mine are from the engine bay....

I am lucky to be blessed with a family of car enthusiasts who are unbiased in their outlook toward motoring.

Lets all hope that our kids will be able to remember the smell of unburnt fuel and Castrol R, and the days when they came with Dad to a TVR meet and met real enthusiasts, who, despite the politicians and their Global Warming B*ll***s, kept alive the true spirit of motoring!

Cabin pressure related,,, the fumes get drawn in...

This is definitley not uncommon, does the back of the car get quite dirty (exhaust fumes), these can get sucked back in, if it is dirty try lengthening the exhaust pipes on the rear, especially if they are inside the current body line.

Other non-exhaust fumes can enter through slots for bonnet opening and through the heater (ha ha) system.

I had them for some time in my Taimar, eventually got rid of the worst by lengthening the exhaust pipes and using a piece of carpet with a slot cut in it for the bonnet opening levers. Glue the carpet to the bulkhead.

Unfortunately getting rid of these smells is a lot of trial and error, and until you do, it can put you off driving the car.

Just experiment, I'm sure you'll get it sorted

Thanks to the advice on this thread, I now have a smoke free zone inside my M. The rear lights were slightly loose and I decided to take them off (4 hours work including nut splitting etc!) and reseal. I sealed the bonnet catch slots using two strips of brush type draft excluder which work very well.

Now when I get home after a trip out, her indoors no longer greets me with "Pooo you stink like an old TVR".

Maybe she'd rather me smell of the barmaid down the pub - maybe I'll give it a try!?
