Hi,

Picked this up when I saw Moss sell a 'steering rack safety mount' which stops the pinion separating from the tube, causing the steering to fail. Then see link:-

Happens quite a lot….

I have contacted Moss to see their views, as seems an unnecessary risk to me. Having just bought one, I may consider returning it.

Best

Hi, reply from Moss. Seems encouraging.

We had one incident of a TR6 rack tube pulling out of the pinion housing, this prompted us into having the 667-296 made and a recall of racks at that time.
The company that makes these racks did some tests using a machine to measure the tonnage on pulling them apart, it took more tonnage to pull the remanufactured racks apart than the original Triumph racks by more than a ton
It also turned out that the customer who had the failure was rallying his car and was going sideways at the time when he hit a tree stump with the inside of the driver's side front wheel which caused the pinion housing to pull out of the rack tube. We don't warrant for motor sport.
So the answer to your question is you do not need to be worried or fit this kit as in my opinion these racks are stronger than the original racks. My son has one in his Herald 13/60 Estate.

Last update. Have been super assured by Moss that it is not a issue. Have fitted the rack. If the end falls off I will send a spirit message from beyond…
