Alternator for a Viixen
Discussion
Has anyone been down the route of replacing their Crossflow engine (711M) alternator?
I'm trying to determine which unit is correct / suitable for the car - so far the ACR17 seems to be the favourite.
Burton do a nice kit which comes with all new brakets etc but at £300 is there any benefit over a standard £60 item?

Also there are lots of £200 - £400 units from likes of WOSP, Powerlite etc aimed at race cars. But again I'm not sure of any real benefit over standard.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Alternator conversion generally a good idea (more reliable, higher output) but unless you have added significant extra load (pumps, fans, heaters etc) I don’t think you need to go large. A 45A lucas jobby should be just fine. The race types tend to be smaller to save weight and package better but you have to pay extra for that. If you’ve got a standardish car, I would just stick with what FoMoCo did for hundreds of thousands of Escorts and Cortinas and Capris.
That's what I thought. I couldn't see any good reason to spend more than 4 times as much money on the race items. I was more interested in getting a standard but high quality item that's less likely to fail after just 3 years as the current one has. But it's impossible to find any way to determine if any of the suppliers of one standard type is better than another. In the end I just ordered one from Brise as at least they are a reputable supplier.
