Hi ,first time owner of a Taimar .replacing heater sticker provided by phillpot.Original sticker creased .Started to peel off without removing control panel and revealed clear plastic windows exactly where green symbols are .Should this light up from behind when side/ headlights on ??? If so how's this lit ?
Can I avoid pulling dash back to loosen control panel? Any access from radio cutout below ?
How does it come apart ?? Thanks dave

Yes it is illuminated via a bulb at the other end to the switch, via a perspex sheet that then the decal is green but opaque ...the detail is in the printing, so that the green is not simply on top of the black.

This is as such the lever control, which is mounted into a trimmed alloy sheet housing that is held onto the rear of the dash by four screws. The light works when the side/headlamps are on. A@

Hi,thanks Adrian for the info and pics .Will see if the bulb is in its hole at the drivers side as there's no illumination at present ,hopefully if I remove radio unit that will give me enough access.?
Is it Major hassle to remove the unit from behind the dash to replace the sticker ?
Oŕ cut the sticker down and fit in situ .Do the selector lever ends pull off - if your lucky ! Thanks dave

I really didn't think about retro fitting the decal (although I sold it for 25 years) as I have simply removed the dash and swapped in refurbished controllers with cables that would then have a new decal already stuck onto the front prior to mounting onto the trimmed alloy sheet. It is only now I look at the job and see that the trimmed alloy encroaches on simply sticking it on the front. I now presume people did 'something'. I cannot say I have ever been able to find the bulb holders for that unit. The knob don't just come off!

Thanks Adrian,
this is good info. On my 1978 3000S i need to change the Sticker also. I have bought a Sticker to put in place and would like the back lightening to work also. I wondered if after removing the Sticker i could cut down the new sticker and put in place after getting the Light Bulb to work.
I'm not so keen on dropping the Dashboard. So many black wires everywhere and if several come disconnected i'll have problems.
I've got some very small light Bulbs that were supplied by David gerald that might be the right size.
By the way Adrian the hardtop on my car is finished now and i'm well pleased 100%.

As I said, (made/sold loads) I never really thought about how to install it, as, if i needed to change one, I (and rather presumed other would too) would simply replace/refurbish the assembly, adding new cables so the heater system works (the Taimar's /3000S's are 40 years old and rusty cables/foam seal falling off flaps in the heater box need sorting) The decal is the most expensive part. TBH the wiring on a 3000S is the least of your issues on doing that job...re-installing the crash pad/door/screen seals is the mare. The bulb are not the issue, but if the bulb holder is missing (lots of them have been on my cars) I have ended up re-sizing the controller to add a bulb. Glad to hear the roof came together. A@

Hi,think will attempt also to swap sticker without removing dash - so will have to carefully blade around the control panel outer as rest of sticker trapped behind dash .May also add additional plastic sheet into lit recesses so sticker remains flat ( see first pic) - its going to be fiddly getting past levers and will only have one chance to get right.May split top to bottom.?? Perhaps make paper template and trial fit Plasticpig - good look with yours .Bulb looks like could be similar fit to warning light bulbs between tacho and speedo ??

Dave, that bulb holder is petite in comparison to those bulb holders, as I said, only IF you have not got the bulb holder is it then a problem. A@

Anyone know or can measure the internal diameter of the bulb holder hole in the rear corner of the controller- thanks dave

Maybe it easier to use a normal Bulb Holder, fix it to an alloy plate and put it just behind the Clear Window.

Both... IMHO, until you have checked that there is no holder/bulb, (I can pull the dash forward again to take a measurement then of the holder), the plastic housing has a ground internal (odd sort of thing) and my thoughts are that, it is to seal light into the holder at a particular point. because the bulb/light is refracted through the sheet of perspex and the height in the holder seems to critical (been there done that and wearing the T-shirt to get it right in the past) Question...have you checked that the Rheostat/resistor is actually working (there's 35.00 to change that for a mechanical equivalent because the correct obsolete used OE item about 90.00). Hi,thanks for info Adrian. Mine has no rheostat in the lights circuit. Will have a look behind at the weekend .Have made acetate plate and trial fitted over levers with knobs on by hooking over top one and then moving bottom and doing the same .Have now stuck new sticker to the acetate plate. Plan is to glue to the controller face .

Cool, my thoughts are that the shrinkage is related to those silly hot days that we get here once in a blue moon and anything black will absorb the sun and say 'take a hike'...but then lots of them are 40 years old. I will pull the dash if needed (it is only sort of in the car rather than fully bolted up).
On my 3000S, I have my restored to everything working as part of a full rebuild, that bulb is a miniature cap-less 2w (I think, as it got changed along with every other bulb). I have a couple of old looms from write off cars that I must search through for that holder, (I will pop them with the spare controllers) as all the other bits are readily available. A@

Hi dave,
very nice job. I need to do the same on my 3000S. I have a new decal and just need to get a piece of the plastic sheet.
Good luck in finding the Bulb lighting.
