Hello Guys,

Started today to find the cause of not self centering of the steering. With the help of Adrian I now know that the proper shocks should be 80 2365 or 80R 2365. I have Koni 1786 shocks and thay had been put together with 29,7cm springs, a 5cm spacer and at the left an extra spacer. It's the front by the way.

This will not be the cause of not self centering according to Adrian, but these parts are not the right parts and the extra spacer only at the left does give a very different spring rate.

The Koni's are expensive and not everybody has them. What is your experience with for example AVO/SPAX/GAZ. Will also need coil over springs.

Where did you guys buy a good set up? Good price and the right parts the first time....

For the self centering i think you will measure the castor first then the camber.

Thanks Alan, but they were aligned 3 months ago to factory factory settings. We only gave the rear a bit more camber for the 205-14 tyres.

Could something be binding? How’s the steering effort? I haven’t driven my car in a very long time, but I don’t remember it having particularly strong self-centering. Who set the caster? Any possibility of the upper wishbones being reversed?

I found that going to GAZ helped out with my spring and shock troubles. The got the car up the ramp measured everything and provided me with the right spirng and shock combo making my shocks as per what was required. Good People IMO.

Cannot find anything binding. With the trackrod ends disconnected, i can turn the steering wheel with 1 finger. I feel a bit of resistance, but it is easy to turn the wheel with 1 finger. Adrian gave me a step by step method to check if someting, down the line is binding. The hub assembly is also easily turned by hand with the trackrod ends removed. The left side moves with a little bit more resistance. I think/hope i can improve this a bit with new topball joints greasable.

I renewed the trunnion bushes recently and greased the trunnions aswel. There was no play in the trunnion. A friend of mine, who is a mechanic wil take a look at it before I bolt everything up again. I have got 2 AVO's with correct springs which will leave the UK next week with the topball joints. Fingers crossed for the new custom rules….

This won’t be of any significance to your problem, but for future reference the trunnions should be lubricated with EP 80/90 gear oil, not grease.
