Decent coolant
Discussion
Sorry for the next question.
Just got my car going and ive sprung a leak.
So I need to sort that out and get some coolant.
What do people recommend use for their older cars?
1971 Vixen 2500 but with a 74 TC engine in.
Something like?

Thank you all again.

Can't advise on the Antifreeze and this may be too late but I store some of the deionized water from the house dehumidifier from its use in the winter months if I do a coolant change to dilute the Antifreeze.
Suppossed to be better than distilled or tap water, but read about it first.

Water from the dehumidifier is distilled, but you really don’t want to use it.
Yes, it is “pure” water so I can understand why people think it is good. It has no impurities etc which may cause silt and sludge.
However, pure water is very good at holding dissolved oxygen. Guess what you need for corrosion? Water and oxygen? So you don’t want one dissolved in the other.
Ethylene Glycol does have anti corrosion properties but I still prefer it mixed 50/50 with tap water from a corrosion point of view, although mixing 50/50 with dehumidifier water is ideal from a sludging point of view.

It is to a degree distilled (de-ionised is a different thing) but is not by any means '100% pure' having condensed out of the air in your garage which is dirty, onto an evaporator coil, dirty, into a container, dirty, and transfered into a jug or whatever, dirty
Tap water is fine, unlike a kettle that firs up because you keeping putting 'fresh' water (with minerals) in it, a cooling system is basically a sealed loop. The small amount of minerals that enter with a complete coolant change are negligable. Choosing a good quality, correct spec. anti freeze is far more important........ imho
Here endeth todays Science lesson
