M Seat Replacement
Discussion
Hi,
I'm looking at Classic Buckets to replace the drivers seat in my recently acquired 3000M. The driving position just feels more cramped than I remember in my Taimar many moons ago, but I may just have grown. There are a good number of options out there that are similar in width to the factory fitted ones now residing (49cm). I intend to fix the replacement without runners to generate some additional knee room below the 12" steering wheel and hopefully chose a seat with a thinner back to add some legroom as well.
Any assistance or practical advice on what manufacturer/model work in the M cars appreciated.
Many Thanks

Personal choice of course but i have chosen to stay with original seat and bought new Foams from Adrian very nice top job.
With new Foams and new support it's very nice.

Does that approach help gain more space for your driving position, are the new foams thinner?

Thanks Alan,
I think there is at least an inch to be gained removing the wood, square tub frame work and the runners. However, I've always found the TVR seats less than comfortable hence my search for a reversible soft ass alternative. There are a lot of threads around about Vixen high back, MX5, Elise seats but these seem to not really provide more space, or if they do are made of unobtanium and are very sought after.

Hello Ivor,
I removed the original seats from my '74 M. They were well past their best before date. Yes they could have been re-foamed etc. but I wanted something with a bit more side support and a functioning and adjustable lumbar. So I bought a used set of '06 Elise seats. They are not much different in overall width than the originals on the outside but you sit a bit deeper and somewhat farther back than the original seats. I too removed the runners and have the seats flat to the floor, still with the tracks in place for forward/aft adjustment.

Thanks for the advice gents.
Function over form, I picked up a decent pair of VX220 seats this morning in exchange for some C20XE parts I had surplus to requirements. Centre panel colour even matches the car and there is more padding than the Elise seats. Can see already that I will claim back a couple of inches in leg length and height.
Might be able to get a 13" steering wheel in there now....

Cobra GT3 Historic Bucket Seat does look good and is £366 incl vat.
It would give more of a Rally look inside the car. You would just need a Tripmaster to finish the look.
Just depends use of car Sunday driving Armchair look or Boy racer/Rally seat of Pants driving.
When i was younger for sure it was Boyracer but now it's Armchair Sunday driving.

I am also considering a change in the future. These VX220 look too modern for the car in my opinion. I find the seats at intratrim interesting. Classic bucket seats.
Yep, they are too modern but my priority is comfort/operability as I tend to drive and not show my cars. Having looked in detail at the size and cost of the classic bucket type seat they didn't make as much usable space available and were much more expensive. Reversion is but an hour with a spanner.I
