2nd October the ebay auction for these interesting project Vixens was withdrawn

Curious who managed to purchase them, looked like they had been disassembled for years and years

FYG 608J Green Vixen with x/flow engine

LWY 983K Orange Vixen with TR6 2500 engine

Good luck getting these cherished classics back on the road

I bought them.
The Vixen is an S2 and interesting because I think it might be last S2 produced before the S3 started. It has several things the same as my very early S3 e.g. hydraulic clutch, single central heater control knob and heater box inlet on the pedal box side.
The 2500 has a very good body but the chassis is rough.
Both will be restored to be sold. the Vixen to as close as I can possibly get it to factory original specification and the 2500 will probably be more of a resto-mod on a new chassis with a more modern powertrain.

Nice one ! They look great so far - or at least the nicely stacked crates do.

Well done as an opportunity to restore to sell on its a fantastic chance for someone that wants a fully restored car themselves and does not have the time or ability to do it themselves.
It may make sense once you have fully assessed both projects to actually advertise them for sale now so the future owner can be involved in the build decision wise so when they finally take the car they feel they have got something they where involved with from the start.
A bit like commissioning a special car from the factory and going to see it and being involved as it progresses.

The S2 is such an honest original car that there is really only one direction to take it in which is to rebuild it as close as possible to how it rolled out of the factory.
The 2500 is missing a few bits and has been messed about with a bit and the chassis is touch and go as to wether it is restorable or not so I might do something different with that.

Quick update for anyone who might be interested:

Green S2: gearbox, diff, driveshafts, propshaft, rear hub/upright assemblies, suspension and brakes are all done. Engine currently being built. Body and chassis being prepped for paint. Hope to have it done and ready for sale by the end of the summer.

Orange 2500: Replacement chassis, 2.1 Zetec fresh built engine on 45DCOE’s, Type 9 five speed box, 7 x 15 Minilites all purchased and in storage. Will start the rebuild after I’ve finished the green one so will hopefully have it done and on the market early next year.

Bloody hell M3 you are completely putting me to shame. I've just redone one of the dust shields on my front brakes and it took me half the day. Ive been at my box of bits rebuild for 9 1/2 years. getmecoat

I am very lucky that I am able work on my cars pretty much full time if I want so I can push the pace a bit!

Well, you do know that we need pics right? it would also be great to hear a bit about what you did to each car etc.

My car came to me as a shell, a chassis, half a dozen large boxes of rusty metal bits and the large mechanical bits, also rusty.

I have had to find numerous odd bits, bonnet catches, interior lights, Sparto indicator lights, numberplate lamp, door handles and locks, door catches, the list goes on and on and on, but part of the enjoyment really. What did you find was missing in your jigsaw?(s).

The green car was 95% complete. Unbelievably original. I think it must have been off the road for longer than it was on it. Missing bits mainly interior. That said, I think probably more than 50% of the car will end up being new by the time I’ve finished.

The orange car was probably 90% complete. Again, very original but had lost a couple of key things like seats and wheels and the engine that came with it was not the original one and the chassis turned out to be beyond redemption. So I’m going to restomod it with the Zetec engine, 5 speed box, Cosworth LSD etc. It should be a bit of a beast.

Having seen progress, M3 is going to great lengths to get the green S2 spot on. The quality of work so far is outstanding and it’ll be as near as can be got to a new car at a 1971 dealership.
My suggestions of using mod parts have been met with justifiable disgust and when all is done it’ll be a cracking OE car.
Andrew it’s a good idea marketing early as someone will benefit greatly from having an original spec car rather than it having been modded like every other Vixen that I’ve seen including yours and mine!
Probably the only car that the insurance question ‘has the car been modified’ will be accurately answered no!

Thx for the update - great progress in a short time.

On the green Vixen are you prep'ing yourself or using a paint shop? Also what paint code are you going with?

I stripped the paint (one coat!) by hand with a Stanley knife blade and then wet sanded the primer coat back to the fibreglass. All body work after that is being done by specialists. I’ve got a paint code from matching to the original paint.

Is wet sanding OK on GRP? I seem to remember reading that it might cause some water to get trapped and cause paint finish issues. Or is this just where there is gel cracking or other damage?

Just curious because I'm sanding down the bulkhead on my car at the moment and any reduction in dust would be welcome.

I don't use wet sanding for that reason, but I am no expert
